HOW QUICKLY should I build links to a new site

This might be review and I looked around for answers. But would like get an opinion from DA PROS. I'm trying to figure out how quickly I should build links to a new site/domain. Especially worried about google. Thanks.

monitor the link growth of competitors, double that is generally what i would look at doing if you want to rank reasonably quickly and stay in the indexes without getting called a spammer

How big is the site? If it's big enough you can get away with massive deep-linking with practical impunity. If it's parasite hosted you can get away with thousands of low-authority links/day.
