Blog Commenting On Relevant Sites - Is It a Must?

Howdy guys,

I joined BHW recently and have learned tons of useful things especially what to do after the Penguind update. I see people sharing their thoughts that high PR manual blog commenting work great after Penguin. But my question is: Is it a must to manually comment on blogs that are relevant to my niche? Because, let's face it, there are some small niches that don't have many blogs out there and if they do, most of them are all low PR blogs. That means it would be hard to find any PR1+ page to comment on (not to mention they would ******** it or not).

On the other hand, I see many blogs in active and big niches like SEO, technology, blogging, etc. have many high PR page and I could make decent comments on them easily because I have knowledge on the subjects. But that's where my concern kicks in. Could it be harmful to get a link from completely irrelevant blogs to my niche sites?

And my I ask, if you have done manual blog commenting yourself, what's your experience regarding it post Penguin?

Everything helps though personally I'd rather comment on a relevant (or slightly relevant) blog with PR1 than a non-relevant PR4. Ask yourself where it would be more natural to get a link from.

The more diverse your link portfolio is the better rankings you should get. They aren't a must but very recommended anyway.

Related and high page rank blog comments are some of the most powerful backlinks you could get. Not the type you simply use scrapebox for, the ones where you take time and build a relationship with the website/post your posting on.

NoFollow backlinks are a part of a normal link profile, and they DO help your website (I aim for 75% NoFollow)

As for relevancy - it's extremely important right now. Even if there are no blogs on your exact niche, there will be blogs that are in the same general category, and some blogs may at least have pages that are more relevant, so try to find those.
Just get as close as you can to your topic - in the case of blog comments, relevancy IS more important than high PR.

For me , relevant blog commenting do work . I first check the relevancy then PR of the blog . btw its all about testing and finding what works for you .

Even if they are no-follow, links from relevant blogs will help a lot, especially when you take the time to find quality pages to post on (even moderated), and your comment related to the post.

I still see many are d0f0llow especially blogs that enable commentluv and keywordluv plugins. But it's true that many blog owners (especially in the IM-related niches) are slowly switching their comment system into nofollow. Regarding traffic, I always consider it as a bonus. If there are some, then great, if not, it's OK, my main concern is the link on high PR pages with low OBL (yes, I'm not a networker by any means, I'm an SEO ).

Good point guys Link diversity (in sources, anchor texts, n/d0-follow) is a big factor now. I don't use blog commenting as the main link building technique because I know it's too risky.

But 75%? Is it too high? I know mixing in n0follow links is a must but your number is something that I never heard before Can you explain more on this?

I really like your advice of looking at more general blogs to find relevant content. That's something I had thought about before but never implemented as I thought too general means irrelevant. So, do you use blog commenting as a part of your link building campaign? What's your experience so far with it? Does it contribute a considerable part in ranking your pages high on SERPs?

You just have to make sure that you're giving value to the post and the conversations, and that your link actually supports the ideas that you've brought up. If you're just going to leave a link there without the intention of adding value, whether you've done it manually or through automation, it's going to be bad.

Yeah mate, I agree on that I did blog commenting myself before and I know how to make decent comments. But my concern is just if I have links from irrelevant blogs coming to my sites, will Google see it spam or not.

look at the backlink profiles of some websites that have more natural backlinks. (this can vary in different niches).
I have never seen a naturally made backlink profile of a small to medium website where more than half of the backlinks were do follow - they are usually anywhere from 65-85% nofollow.

So I aim for 75, but anything over 60% nofollow is ok to me.
I get that percent mostly by simply NOT checking if a backlink is going to be do- or don't- follow.
If it looks like a good place to drop a link, do it.

I forgot to ask right in the OP that where do you put your links (and/or anchor text links) when you place your comments? In the middle of content, or right at the header like some keywordluv blogs do, or somewhere else?
