It may seem like a silly title, but I'm quite serious. After reading 100s of SEO books, articles and information on this forum.... what exactly is white hat SEO in your opinion? I see it is a very slow way to get ranked... I would love to hear other peoples opinions.

p.s
How can SEO companys who state 100% white hat techniques rank websites for high difficulty keywords? (waiting for someone to put a sarcastic joke)

Buying links is blackhat.

Make a good website
and let people talk about your website in different blogs and websites

theres no white hat seo ...
maybe greyhat
And gundamwing is also correct in what they say. Companies that claim to be white hat are just keeping away from xrumer/scrape box type blasts and trying to build links in what appears to be a natural way. By virtue they are grey hat

White hat SEO is like the concept of infinity--it's just an idea, it doesn't actually exist.

Think of a perfectly round circle. It's actually impossible, you can only approach it, you can never reach it. Same thing.

Great replys, I like everyones views. :)

What did you just say? Can no one answer the question?

I think whitehat means you're building a website but you're not trying to build links to it.... you are solely concentrating on on-page factors.

However, in a less pure sense, these are how I'd class a few common tactics:

Whitehat
- guest blog posts
- blog comment on relevant blogs manually
- build some awesome content and tell people about it to hope they link to you
- directory submissions for directories relating solely to your niche

Greyhat
- build web 2.0s with unique content
- sponsored posts on others' blogs
- building templates for wordpress with footer links
- slightly crap directory submission
- link exchange with related websites

Blackhat
- private blog networks, building your own or buying links on one
- using software (Xrumer, scrapebox) to build links
- weird 301 redirect schemes
- mass link exchanges
- hacking others' sites for links / other dodgy stuff that people don't really do

these are a few to get you started - I'm off to bed! All opinions are my own!

my point of view of white hat is like this :

1.you not trying to make backlink with keyword or place a backlink keyword only promote what is your site what for etc
2. sample site facebook flippa blackhatworld strong site content etc ..

Very intelligent definition buddy.

White hat SEO is what google wants, but have never defined it.
White is on page optimization, but not too much (because it's black).
White is when people link you, but when they got something in return it's black.
And the most real definition:
White is whatever google calls white at the moment and black is whatever google punishes you for.

In simplest of terms a white hat site wouldn't take SEO into account at all. The idea behind it is that you create a site that is attractive for some reason that people actually look for the site itself and not just a random search result on Google.

Lets take XKCD as an example. It is popular because other people spread the comics around and link to it, the owner probably doesn't do any SEO himself, he focuses on creating something, because the something he is creating is actually good he gets visitors.

Whitehat SEO is basically not doing SEO at all, it means that you do your best to create a good product, service, content or whatever but you don't do any SEO for it beyond basic on-page factors.

It really is interesting to see everyones views on this! thanks to everyone who have commented. :)

What I believe to be truly white hat is to create a interesting website with rich content that people want to talk about and link to without you having build any links or write any external content yourself.

That being said think about offline marketing, everyone is paying money to force tv adverts, flyers, billboards in your face. What's the difference, oh its against Google TOS :O

White Hat Seo is a oxymoron. The very second you do any Seo, it is no longer natural.

White Hat Seo is like Bigfoot or the lockness monster. They do not exist.

White hat SEO costs a fortune and it takes a lot of time to see some results. Try grey hat. And by the way, there are SEO companies who outsource the work to BHW members.

if you do white hat seo you rank your site next year.
if you do bh seo you rank your site next month.

I belive white hat seo is about manually seo work (at least I used to think like that) and quality links with 0 footprints. for example, article marketing, blogging, guest posts, stealing competitors backlinks, etc.

BH SEO is about automation and huge tiered campaigns. Also there are others BH methods for example, cloaking pages.
