[QUE] How And Where To Start Learning Programming(s)?

First off, i am new to all this and have been reading a lot about the subject but i am getting more confused.

Basically, i want to learn programming language(s) that will empower me to develop web applications.

But in the course of reading about the subjects, i often come across many term which i don't know their meaning
such as:

1 Web development ( i am thinking this is the same thing as web programming)

2 Desktop programming

3 Mobile programming

4 Software development

Please what is the meaning of this term and their functions. More importantly, what programming language(s)
do i need to learn to develop any web applications.


PS: Currently, the only thing i know about website is wordpress installation.

Start off your journey with w3school. First you gotta learn html, css, JavaScript, few popular libraries. Once you are cery good with the frond end then you can stsrt learning a server side language

There are many websites where you can learn, just google mysql beginners tutorial, html beginners tutorial etc etc

It requires devotion and a lot of hard work on your side to become very good and keep on learning. It is something you should do daily, it depends on you alone how long it takes.
if you have a knack for it you will see results very quickly, but in any case before you are very, very good at all of these I would calculate AT LEAST 1 year... And that is if you as I already mentioned, work on it daily for at least a few hours.

and ps: Everything I listed above goes easier with learning by doing, reading every day doesn't count as learning, you only grow through experience and you only become experienced by working on your projects, for example your own website framework, or as beginner at least your own website....


Plus, I forgot to add: If you plan on doing website designs yourself and not outsource, then you will also need decent Photoshop skills and you should learn the basics of SSH,have a cheat sheet ready with the most important commands, plus you should learn the basics of server administration at least so you know how approx. a server works and how you should set up applications so they are fast also under heavy traffic.

Now on to the part with database interaction
Since you want also desktop and mobile I would go for

Sql in general and then find specific database
java or .net

If the case was only web development I would go for php and not java or .net

I have found codeacademy.com pretty useful. You start with JavaScript, then go to HTML & CSS before moving on to JQuery. That is the point where they are at the moment, but as I understood, Python & Ruby on Rails are also coming.

So as a starting place that could be just what you need.

lynda.com is quality content, but very pricey... if you use a good torrent site you could always search for training videos...

Simply buy or download books, you will learn way more than with online tutorials. Use online tutorials, when you're looking for something specific.

Books are useless. Few years ago i have read around 10 books about .NET and C#.
They all contained the same information, but presented differently.
Read a book or two and take action. If you don't know how to do something google it.
I usually outsource the web designing stuff, i hate coding the lousy HTML/CSS shit, but enjoy the javascript and jQuery and PHP and C#
