I agree - there is less competition in Australia but I believe Google would weight local backlinks and content differently for google.com.au rankings.

Also, in each country people use slightly different search engine mixtures and searching methods.

Most tools focus on .com site or .gov/.edu rather than .au. Many tools are able to be adjusted to suit but I am always keen to know what people are finding in my area.
