I'd just attribute the 300 or so people who downloaded the software without thanking to lurkers/non-members/idiots and the like. How hard is it really to hit a damn button after someone puts their time into creating something and then gives it out for free? Can completely understand why he's not sharing it any more...

If you are serious at all about marketing on Twitter though I'm sure you can buy the bot relatively cheaply...it's definitely worth it.
