What is the average retention rate for membership sites and what is the average life span for a member?

From what I have researched, retention rates for a membership site are tied to the level of service on the part of the site owner. Paying members who find high quality information and quick responses to their questions are those who are more likely to stick around for the long haul. Top-notch content and high levels of interaction are also what gives the perception of value. Some of the best ways to keep members coming back to a membership site include listening to their feedback and providing content that fits their needs. A lot of this carries over from basic customer service concepts.

These are some nice tips but I want average numbers to compare with.

You're going to find that there aren't really any average numbers. Like insanebeeftw said, how long people remain a member is going to depend on what they're getting in return.


If people do not feel they're getting their money's worth they will leave quickly. On the other hand if people believe they're getting a phenomenal deal on something they will remain a member for an extremely long period of time.


I have one membership site were I've had members for three and four years, another one of my membership sites only keeps members for three or four months.


In short there's no way to compare one membership site to another. It is going to depend on what you're providing and if it is something these people see value in month after month.
