Is anyone removing any links?

Hi, guys. Today I got one of those messages from Google about "unnatural" links to one to my sites. The site is not crazy important, but this made me wonder, Are any of you actually removing any links at all? There seems to be so much advice about removing links or reporting your own links.
I always thought that it would be the last thing I would do. What do you think?

I am removing links (not for my sites) for my clients sites, and stripping off anchor texts.. Working on backlink profile.. One good thing which penguin/panda did is the new opportunities it created for the SEO guys. You can still get new work from you existing clients in the name of 'Backlink Profile Management'.

i didn't try and remove or modify any backlinks...too big of a job that would of taken forever and probably would not have gotten too many links removed anyways...

It's better to remove unnatural links. Because when they do next review about your site manually or automatically by bot, if they recognize still live those link, then you'll be penalized. So remove all spam links. And build links on low OBL pages and anchor text diversity is very important.

Its hard part to do but do natural link building from now on.It is only way to keep rankings after google penguin update.

If Google has issued you the warning, then you should remove your backlinks... If the website is not an important project for you, you may go away with this warning. But do keep one thing in mind, this will surely affect your website negatively.

Hmm, I wonder if changing the anchor texts would help. But I guess in my case it won?t, because the links have already been flagged. So, I either report them or remove them.

I know. But if I don?t remove them, I'm most likely to get slapped. I did some research and it seems like most of the guys who received these warnings got slapped.
Manny, what?s your opinion on listing the links that I supposedly have no control of when filing a reconsideration request?

If you can remove them, do it and make sure to remove all of them. Then send a reconsideration request and start making only quality links and have in mind that you need to build a natural looking backlink profile. This means 10-15 % exact match keyword (your main keyword) and the rest 80-85% raw links + click here etc. links + your site name links. I think that this would bring you many benefits and good results.

Just build more links with different anchors and URL/domain in anchors.

Definately DON'T remove any links. This will let google know that you were engaging in black hat techniques. Just keep building!

I would say removing links is worth the time and effort if you have enough links that trigger that warning message from Google that the OP mentioned. If there are only a handful of those links and little in terms of changes in ranking, you can probably get away with leaving things as is for the time being. I do think that any of the algorithm updates create an opportunity for website house-cleaning, and some members bring up a good point about signaling black-hat SEO techniques by doing a mass link removal all of a sudden. Smaller scale removals of links that are the least relevant is probably a good rule of thumb in a lot of cases.

Actually, I own a few directories, and after the penguin I started to receive daily request of links removal from various SEO companies and website owners. I think they know what they're doing.

I am literally sitting on my hands for two weeks and watching rankings every day.


I already see drastic rank improvements (moving from page 9 to page 3) for 20 % of my keywords in just 7 or 8 days.
Other keywords have moved 5 to 9 positions

So i am gonna wait another week and decide what to do then.

But remove links? No..forget it. Too much time and also removing them is an indirect way of telling Google you admit to getting "bad" links.

Well, see, a mass link removal is barely possible anyway. And, it?s my gut feeling that removing links will put you on some watch list or black list, or whatever.
BTW, so far my site is still there. I continue to build links, but not aggressively. Like I said, this particular site is not a big deal. But I?d like to know what everybody else is doing with their backlinks, because you never know what may happen to your bigger sites.

I did nothing, as I received this warning message, for site that has 0 links, registered only 2 weeks ago, installed webmaster tools, added no content and still received this message - "unatural links..."
