Theory: G is Gaming You With Penguin Randomness

My sites have all done fine through the Panda and Panda eras thus far. I am far too lazy to dig up links for you, but I have seen many conflicting reports on Penguin Algo update.

1. OMFG I have links from blog networks and my site tanked.
2. OMFG My site went to #1 and all I used were blog links!!!!!

That's the idea. I've seen it a lot on a couple of forums. Well here is a possibility...Maybe Google is adding 'randomness' to its algorithm.

It makes sense.

They monitor forums. They know what SEO spammers are up to. They know we SEO people are pretty damn good at monitoring our sites and split testing specific SEO and link building methods.

They would be smart to add randomness to penalties and search ranks. By dulling down all results both positive and negative, it still gives good results, just using a lower standard deviation of the relevancy of those results. This would keep SEO spammers guessing and reward the more average sites that are genuinely popular and aren't the ones that might be 'trying too hard'.

there seems to be a lot of randomness to penguin as everyone has conflicting results on what works and what doesn't...and what sites were affected and others that were not...

others say penguin targets onsite seo, and i totally 100% disagree with this...

not sure what to believe at this point...penguin is a mystery right now...we will figure it out...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is a very difficult update to put a finger on. I am still not sure if one of my sites tanked because of on site or off site. Just when I thought that super low keyword density was the way to go, I am seeing sites with repetitive keywords, with bolding, coming back strongly in the SERPs.

I am not sure what to make of it. I read another article where someone suggested a theory about Google rotating algorithms, to see which worked for them best. Maybe they are running a test algorithm now, to see how things pan out. Who really knows though???

Why it seems random is this: contrary to what most people say it is a sitewide penalty. They are using thresholds like with Panda, based on keywords. So in the end it is the trust/quality/search-impact of your specific page VS. the treshold. I am seeing keywords going in and out of penalty. It may seem random, but it is not. It is all about that treshold. The treshold factors are dynamic, the page value factors are dynamic, as they change the two dance together and you see something (that only seems) random. I am seeing many SEO gurus who are totally lost and feeding their crowds with false information.

The reason for the randomness is because people don't know the effects of penguin and are speculating. As soon as people start to learn what the common denominators are, it will suddenly appear less random
