Newspaper advertising

Hey BHW,

I was thinking of advertising in my local newspapers. So i submitted an ad for free gift card. I put my domain name in the advertisment which forward all the traffic to my copeac affiliate link for gift card.
Today the newspaper company called me saying that I am not allowed to post these kind of ads in the newspaper and that website links are not allowed.
Is this true?

I was thinking of doing the same thing. But sticking pamphlets under peoples windshield wipers on their cars.

As davejug said. If you PAID for the ad they are unlikely to care.

Most newspapers have advertising guidelines that clearly state what you can and cannot place in your ads. If no website address is allowed, you may be able to use an email address (hooked up to an autoresponder if you wish, but you may want to wait until your ad gets published before you turn on the autoresponder/vacation response) or a phone number with a recorded message.

However, some newspapers do not allow recorded messages (e.g., a recorded commercial/pre-sell for your product or service) unless it's obviously a voicemail box. (I can't imagine that they'd ban all types of recorded messages). What you could do in that case is say something like, "Hi, this is [your name]. I'm not available right now. If you're calling about the ad in [newspaper name], please leave your name and number, and I'll call you back as soon as I can. Or, you can go to [website] for more information." I haven't tested this, so I have no idea if it'll work.

Funny you should post this because I just had the same thing happen. My local paper was pretty cool about it though and just required me to add in that the person must complete BLAH BLAH BLAH offers. I'm going to give it a go and see how it converts.

Anybody had any experience with highly targeted, dedicated magazines? ipod offers in gadget magazines, free caravan in caravan monthly etc etc. Not into the cpa methods yet that's why i thought i would throw it out there

If they said it, it's true. You may have better luck in a different paper or by using a paid ad instead of a free one.

I have tried newspapers years ago, with little luck for general items. If you're trying to promote some kind of affiliate, i would promote within specific niche magazines and papers rather than city newspapers.

That's the key kiddies! It aint any different than marketing online or anywhere else.. the more you target a specific niche, the better results you will get.. general targeting will bring general results...

I've made some serious profit from offline advertising, everything from going downtown and handing out simple flyers (really simple), to taking an ad on the front page of a tattoo magazine here in Toronto.

Paying works best... free will bring gold sometimes...

Keep at it, it took me around 4 or 5 ads published before I really found my groove. Now I just have a template that I use and crank out new ads in 30 minutes...

Pennysavers, Thrifty Nickel, Scottsmans press and the list goes on. Stick with paid weekly's. Google paid weekly classified newspaper.

In some countries, I know this is illegal so be careful!

In the UK I know its definatly illegal, someone did it in a car park owned by the company I worked for and it caused a lot of trouble, people accused the "advertiser" of damaging their property to name but one offence, I cant remember the rest, but their was a few.

Your best bet would be to check the statutes of your state (if in the U.S.) and city. Most states and major cities in the U.S. publish their laws online. If not, you could always call the appropriate city department and ask.

I actually have a few free ads in a county magazine here, it gets circulated to around 50,000 homes, most of them quite high class, naturally I market expensive stuff to them. Anyone who lives in the UK who wants to give it a try just go to

Any free marketing is good marketing. Plus there are other county magazines if you hunt them down.

errrrr..... i live in Cheshire and Get Cheshire Life. All the ads in there are paid ads, (and dammed expensive at that)i cant see them letting you advertise for free.. hey id like nothing better to be wrong but some how i cant see it...

No, it's NOT true, sue the shit out of them. Maybe you will win the newspaper in the lawsuit, Then you can cram it full of your affiliate links.
