I had an emd sat in position two forever. Penguin comes it hits position 7. I then say f it and 301 emd to aged domain that was NOT tracking for KW and now aged domain is in position 1.
You take 8 and 301 to position 3 site you should hit position 1. IMO of course others factors could be at play here. For example if your trying to rank for dog snuggies and the first position is seomoz, good luck with that. Now if your just trying to tackle a wiki page you should be able to take em.
On a side note. If you decide to 301 your position 8 into position 3 you will not instantly lose position 8. It takes a few days for that snakey bastard to drop of into no where land. So you could always test the waters, as they say.
On an even more side note, there is nothing more white hat then buying links off fiverr that are in the same niche as you. Not saying buy 30 or so, but maybe just one if you havent been spamming the world to badly. Blogroll links can be natural if the OBLs on said sellers page are not pointing to you, me, baby jesus and all the rest of the BHW community. Send an email or 3 and find out sellers OBL, niche, hell most of the time they will just tell you the webpage address.
Personally I would love to take first, and keep a second site on the first page.
