Must Transfer Site Built With Dreamweaver --Suggestions, Help?

Today I got a new client whose website is a nationwide. I was only supposed to be doing SEO for him but while his secretary was handing me a check, I opened my big mouth and said, "it's good your site is simple html because that may make it easier to transfer in the future." That's when he said,"Yeah transfer it. That's what I want," and out the door he went, heading to another appointment.

Well, I'm an expert with Wordpress and Joomla! but know nothing about Dreamweaver. Is there a plugin or program I can use to make this transfer painless?

Any help is appreciated.

If your transferring ISP's most of them will do it for you. If not free it would be very little charge. If you want to do it yourself Check out the Dreamweaver Help screens. I am sure with Dreamweaver it would be very easy To do.

I use dreamweaver for one of my personal sites.

I did not setup updating through the software, I only uploaded the files produced from dreamweaver... which was simple html and the folder structure.


I would say that you should be able to use a simple FTP program, like cuteFTP, WS FTP, etc. and just drag and drop the entire contents of the root FTP folder of the domain.

upload it to a new location and your done.... in theory.

you can easily test this out. if the paths were setup relative, then you should be able to open the index file of the local copy and it should act like it was on a web site ( unless it has server side dependencies... you need to check with the setup and hosting )

Yeah, I'm pretty sure you'd be able to just drag and drop if its just html and then its just a matter of pointing the names servers in the right direction. Do they host email on the same server? shit'll get a little tricky if it is but only because you'll have to update the email settings on everyones email client.. really not to hard though.

I don't use Dreamweaver, but I transfer sites every now and again. This is what I do. First I alert the new host of the transfer. Many transfers are free and the host will do it for you. Then I go into my web program and change the remote properties for uploads. I just took a look at uploading with Dreamweaver http://www.siteground.com/tutorials/dreamweaver/website_upload.htm and it is the same procedure as the web utility program that I use. Follow the directions from the link that I gave you and you will be good to go. If you need any help, pm me.

Dreamweaver sucks. Even Komposer is better option compairing to DW.

Regarding transfer, do it as usual html site. All you need is Filezilla and good quick internet connection.

1) create hosting account at WHM with the same username and password as in the old account
2) add domain in CPanel
3) create MySQL database with the same name and user as on the old site
4) transfer files with Filezilla through ftp
5) import the database from backup

To change the subject up a bit, what would you recommend for transferring Joomla sites? For Wordpress I use the Duplicator plugin but I struggle with Joomla transfers!

I think the best thing for me is to find a host that will do it for me as you suggested. The site is BIG.

I think that's the best way to go. They will do everything for you and you won't have to worry about a thing. I have tried many hosts and personally like hostgator best. They have phone support, but I just go in their live chat and they solve the problem quickly. Something to remember-if you want to keep the domain name with someone different from the host you are transferring the site to, then change the nameservers. That is very easy to do and only takes a minute. If you need help with that, just give me a yell.

Maybe I should have said "expert at building Joomla sites" because I have yet to successfully transfer a joomla site short of rebuilding it on another server, loading the same modules and re-creating articles, adding database and database user. It doesn't take that long to do it if you have a small to medium-sized site. With wordprees of course all you have to have is backupbuddy and it's a breeze.

In this case it was rather simple. I compressed the site main folder(domain) in file manager (cPanel), downloaded it, extracted to my harddrive, uploaded via FTP to folder (domain) on new server. Did not create a data base. Everything works fine. Everything was simple html and images.
