Hey there Jstover!

How is everything going after panda/penguin whatever?

I have a site I wish you to do some work on. But not sure yet.

Site has almost no backlinking done, and one no backlinking at all.

1 is EMD but branded name.. 1 is totaly fresh not branded what do you suggest is best?

Regards,

Dollarzz

I have only been on this service for 5 days, so cant really comment on the service itself. However, from my collection of websites, I have two websites that I began link building to in the last month or two and they were not hit at all with Penguin - whereas the older more established sites were the ones that got hit hard. I think now is the perfect time to start new sites - so I would say go for it.
Be sure to keep your anchor text diverse and minimise your kw usage in it and I think you will be safe.

Review.

Subscribed to this service on February 20 for the 25 keywords package.
On April 10 I was provided a screenshot of the abysmal results. One keyword moved from 16 to 14 while the rest didn?t move at all, were in red having dropped in rank, or were outside of the top 100. John kindly offered to continue SEO efforts for free until the keywords started ranking.

Today I asked him to discontinue SEO on my site for good. Mainly because of the lack of noticeable progress and lack of ranking reports that I was suppose to receive every friday, also because I wanted to move onto something that works. His last skype message to me was "Let me check the rankings" of which there was no follow up.

I selected this service because from reading his posts he seemed to be a knowledgeable person, there are many favorable reviews, my work frequently has me offline for weeks at a time so I needed a monthly pay and forget service.

This service did not work for me. Just an honest review. Not looking for refund nor do I want one.

I am sorry that your site did not do well. I tried to offer you the service for free until it started ranking better to make it right. I would have continued the service for as long as it took. This is all I can really do in this kind of environment. I looked at the link grids and links were definitely getting built to this site. After looking at the rank reports, the site was actually starting to move a bit, but nothing in to write home about.

Guys, here is the deal. I want all my clients to do well. To the point where many times I lose money on the deal, just like this. Right now we are in a very difficult time with SEO. Not exactly the easiest time in history to run an SEO business. There are so many factors that as a service we can not control, so not every customer is going to do well. Right now we have over 300 clients, and the large majority of them are doing well. Many of my clients actually saw great gains after Penguin. Those with crappy link profiles, and lack of natural anchor text profiles got hit the worst. Unfortunately we have no control over the clients previous link building efforts. This is where it gets tricky for us as a SEO business.

In the coming days I am going to write a best practices thread to not only help people understand what is most important after the newest updates, but also what we expect from our clients.

We are doing good. As I mentioned in the previous post, in the next 2-3 days I am going to write a best practices thread, and post some of my observations with the latest update.

Update:

As we all know the last few months have been difficult for many of us in the SEO world. Many have lost their incomes, or watched them shrink. Penguin came along and was the nail in the coffin so to speak. This update was probably one of the most devastating SEO updates in the history of the industry, at least the most devastating update I have ever seen.

Now a couple weeks later, the dust is starting to settle a bit, and we are starting to figure out what it is that Google wants. What does Google want? Fundamentally it is what they have wanted all along: quality relevant links. That and natural anchor text profiles.

There is a great article by Microsite Masters, which not only confirms what I have we have been telling people for months, but also backs their findings up with actual data (rare in the SEO world). If you haven't read the article yet click here (I am helping them diversify their anchor text profile:).

If you are too lazy to read, here is a synopsis for you. What they found is that websites that had anchor text profiles with less than 50% generic anchor text terms (www.website.com, website.com, site name, http://www.website.com, click here, learn more, etc..) were more likely to lose rankings with this update. They also showed that relevant links in the same niche are far more important than none relevant links, and sites with high amounts of non relevant links got hit the hardest. So in short it is important to variate your anchor text, and place your links on relevant websites.

So what does this mean for my service? Well as I mentioned above, we did see a good amount of clients get hit with this update. We also had many clients gain rankings. I have also analyzed many link profiles from clients, and came to the same conclusions that Micro Masters did well before their article came out. It just really helps having data to backup your findings.

As previously mentioned, we saw the writing on the wall when the first algorithm iteration started at the end of January and started testing our current methods. On the 20 sites we tested, none have been affected by any of these updates. Most importantly, none were affected by the Penguin update. As of March 28, we moved over to our new strategies, and so far things are doing well.

So what does this mean for our clients? Since this latest update, it is really important to be smart about your SEO strategies. The days of blasting links with the same keyword in the anchor text are over. Therefore, we need to make specific rules from here on out in order for new clients to qualify for our service.

Below are our new guidelines:

- If your site is not up to par with it's on page optimization, we can not take it on until you fix it. For example, if you site is a crappy Word Press site, with one page of spun article. No go. Don't be lazy. Your website is like your house. Would you live in a house that is missing walls or toilets don't flush? Treat your website the same. If you don't understand what is important as far as on page, then do some research. On page is one of the easiest and most important aspects of SEO that you actually have control over.

- If your link profile is crappy, or your site has been hit already, we can't make any promises. We have been working on quite a few previously hit sites, and seeing some good recovery, but it certainly takes time. So if you are going to order this service and your site got hit, or gets hit in the first month or so, don't expect it to recover overnight. It will take time.

- Expect to stay AT LEAST 3 months if not longer. Our new methods build links much slower than we used to in order to keep the link velocity as natural looking as possible. If you want to build a solid foundation of links, you should expect to stay long term. Most of my contracts outside of BHW are for at least 6 months. If you are a short term thinker, and think that you can get top 3 position in 3 months, don't even waste your time contacting me. This is the most common mentality I see with people on this forum. They expect miracles in less than 3 months. It just isn't always possible in three months, especially now. If your a short term thinker, and don't understand at least the fundamentals of SEO, this service is definitely not for you.

As usual, if anyone has any questions, please contact me.

I've spoken at length with John and believe he's 100% on target. My first site with him was an aged domain with a very natural link profile before he started with it, and it did very well in Penguin. My second site with him was a pretty new site that also had a very natural link profile and while it's early, it is starting to perform well also. OTOH, most of my sites that had unnatural link profiles (to put it mildly) got clobbered (he didn't have any of those).
This, coupled with the Microsoft Masters article, should be required reading.
How to recover on the sites with bad link profiles? Still waiting for the required reading on that one ;)

.. Awesome! ..Actually I came across the micro-niche masters article last night and I was rushing today to see if I could provide this data to John but it seems he's spending a lot more time than I do researching this Panda-Penguin thing..

I've been baffled by some of my new EMDs which have absolutely no authority and yet survived both Panda and Penguin but now that there is some pretty good data to look at I can see why my new EMDs survived... I have been building a low number of relevant links with a BIG emphasis on anchor text diversification...

All in all, I am happy to see that even-though I've spent 7+ days doing some heavy reading/testing/researching about penguin; John has actually beat me to it and is currently implementing all this knowledge into ranking our sites.

As a side note.. the site we have with John which was hit during this latest itteration has started to recover! I am not going to say that we are exactly where we want to be; neither we are where we were .. but if things continue this way, I am sure our site will be ranking even better than before!

BIG Thumbs up John!

Subscribed. May be interested in contracting some work to you.

What you said about your site being like your house, everyone here should take note of that. I no longer take on new clients that have a crappy site (spam) and are not willing to let us re-build it.

Frankly it's not worth the loss of reputation. SEO is NOT a push button service.

It has been two weeks now from my previous post. After discussing with John about ranking problem, we found out that for some reason, his team missed optimizing my site. As compensation, he agreed to give me one-month SEO for free. He is a helpful and understanding guy. :) So today the SEO service has been done for 2 weeks now. From now on, I will update my ranking weekly by using Rank Tracker.

Hit me up on Skype - jstover77. I will be here most of the day from here on out.

Hey John,

I am interested in placing an order with you for one of my sites, Before I do so I would like to chat with you on skype about my situation and your thoughts on it. Basically the site been hit by panda and I am the second owner of the site, I purchased it right when panda went in effect and literally 2 days after the site got transferred to me it lost ranks, and lost more ranks till the point where the 6 main keywords are no longer ranked in G, It is still ranked in yahoo and bing which is still bringing in traffic but not as much as it should be...

When I noticed the ranks started to drop I wasn't aware of the penguin update, I started blasting links from fiverr...Yeah...I know...not a smart move...But I was desperate as I just maxed out my credit card to purchase this site only to find out its not performing how it should be. Since then the site has lost its ranks on G for the 6 keywords.

I've been researching this update from G and stumbled across this post. I would like to try out the 10 keyword package, I went through and read the whole post and I am aware that my site was hit and that it will take time to recover.

I spent a lot of money on this site and don't want to give up on it, which is why I would like you to take over the SEO.

I've added you on skype.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Yeah, unfortunately you are in the same boat as many. At this point it is still very early and there is not enough data or case studies that can show if sites that have been hit with this update can ultimately recover. I believe that since the update was mostly algorithmic, you can recover a site, and we are seeing recovery from some websites, but it is has been very slow. This being said, we can't guarantee it will recover.

Currently we are testing on sites that have been hit and sites that are clean. Once we start to see some clear cut results I will surely update everyone here in my post.

How Is everyone else checking their SERPS? I guess the weekly reports I am getting from John aren't the most accurate.
