iStore, iPhone App ranking - App Store Algorithm

Since Google has gone all Penguin on us and while we're waiting for the dust to settle, does anyone have any experience in ranking in the Apple iStore?
What factors affect this, and in what order?

A quick Google for the term:
"Apple May Have Tweaked App Store Ranking Algorithm"

Shows the top result showing some algorithm tweaking in play.

Ranking 1 vs 10 is a big difference to apps (like in Google)
It'd be very interesting to list what affects this, and in an order or priority, be good to also discuss success people have had from this and what helped them.
I'm doing some research now and will report back what I find.

Must bump this, I've run a search but it's mainly threads about physical Apple products. Has anyone discussed this? What works? The latest trends to get serious ranking in the app store, and also blackhatting this

One of the biggest factors to rank high in the Apple app store is to sell a lot of programs...

so if you are in a very competitive niche, its hard to rank high b/c you are not selling a lot of programs...its a bit of chicken/egg problem...

maybe you might want to give away your program first to get people to download the program and then once you start ranking better, then you can increase the price/start charging...

I currently sell programs in the app store so I am speaking from experience...hope this helps...

Yes, its one of the main elements.

Also, make sure you make a really good description, including keywords that you think someone searching in the app store would enter if they are searching for your program. Be as descriptive as possible. I am not sure of the exact number of characters that can be used for the description, but its a pretty big number so be descriptive and include as many keywords as you can.

I'm sorry but that isn't right. Putting keywords in your description is pointless - as it has no effect on people's search within the app store. The only place where your keywords have any effect is in your app's title, and in the app's keyword field (which is set to 100 characters). If your developer ID happens to contain your keywords, this has a small effect too.

The only use of putting your keywords into your description, is that people who use your description on their blogs to promote your app, then they will then be using all your keywords etc - helping standard SEO. In terms of ASO however, like I said, keywords in your description has no effect.

I currently don't market in the App store but would love to know more about their ranking algorithm. My guess is that it's actually incredibly basic. But, with the acquisition of Chompp we'll soon see a revamp of the App store and a more "custom tailored" app-store based on your previous purchases, ratings, etc. Which will let more apps get more leg in the game.
