Buying a laptop for my webdesign and coding projects, what's your recommendation?

Hi folks

I'm on the fence of buying my first ever laptop, i've been working all my life on desktops. I'm buying this laptop to manage my webdesign work through, i'll be using Dreamweaver, Photoshop, HTML, CSS, Java, Flash Pro. what're your recommended laptops for this type of work?

Do not get an Alienware. I bought one and it has been the worst computer I've ever owned. I have a $400 Lenovo right now and it's better.

I agree on the Lenovo...not the prettiest things but the keywords and durability is tough to beat. Get a newer thinkpad, can't go wrong there.

What's your justification for this? I've had both and they're both very good. Slightly expensive, but high quality products. I'd recommend the Mac book pro.

You dont't need a MacBook Pro.
Go with a Dell or a Thinkpad. Spend your money on the right stuff!
You will want to have at least 4gb RAM and a dual core CPU.
Also remember that you may want to use a second display, so look out for a laptop with a proper video out (HDMI/DP).

GO with a dell, I own have dell inspiron N5110 i5, It working like a charm, Speed of Laptop is Fast and reliable. Work's great for Design and SEO work. So I'd suggest you to go with dell or VAIO. both are good

right now i'm leaning towards dell inspiron N5110 i5 (what about i7?) that 'SYKing' mentioned.

Another +1 for a thinkpad. I've got an x220 and absolutely love it. I dual boot with windows and Fedora linux (they use linux friendly hardware in virtually all their laptops I think, so the install is really easy). I use windows if I absolutely have to (ie it won't easily work with WINE), and use linux for everything else. I was a complete noob, and just decided to learn linux by using it as my everyday operating system with a view to learning more about it so dealing with dedicated linux servers would be easier. It's cool - I love watching it update whilst I'm doing other stuff

Edit: I mention "Linux" a few times there... hope a Penguin doesn't come after me!

I had (gave it to my daughter) a Toshiba satellite and it overheats and dies. I've replaced the keyboard, hard drive, and cd drive. I wouldn't recommend it. I wouldn't buy dell either - just my personal opinion.

Right now I'm using a acer aspire netbook and haven't had any problems with it. The screen is too small to do alot of graphics, but it handles all those programs and others with no problem. The next one I buy is going to be a viao

Toshiba's are so bad,the one I have has horrible heating problems and short battery span.

Surprisingly Acer is a good laptop people say there a cheap build but it was the longest laptop ive had. Regards to Toshiba, I generally think there a bad build and usually really bulky unless you buy the expensive ones which are over priced in my opinion.

My opinion is go with Dell or an Acer laptop if your on a budget.

If money isnt an option i would probably say an Apple Mac, as i have noticed a lot of web designers and video editors use these type of laptops.

I second the thought to make sure you get one with a good video card /HDMI input. I can hook my laptop up to my big screen tv using HDMI and get perfect Netflix scaled up. I also suggest looking at 17" models if you are not going to be moving a lot when using your computer. The extra screen real estate will make your productivity better. I have never had too many problems with HP laptops. Currently on HP 17" i5-2450.

Btw, if you are splurging on a laptop. If you don't have a good mouse, you should invest in one too. I highly recommend the Logitech MX Revolution. This mouse is total bad-ass. Buttons you can custom program and amazing ergonomic design. Saves you lot of time when you can just click your custom button to do something that would take a few extra seconds of work. Have 2 of them both bought over 2 years ago. Both are running awesome still. There are probably way better mice out there now though.

I must admit I always thought Acer laptops were rubbish but when I actually got one I changed my mind. Acer laptops, at least the one I've got, are pretty damn good.
