I think patience and time is needed when trying to improve PR and SERP. 
The other methods shown above have proven to be very helpful as well.

PR does not mean higher rankings.. it is simply just an authority score. I would look at your MozRank.. this data to me means way more than a simple number score. It shows true domain authority, and url authority.
Also you mentioned that you have 1200 backlinks.. number doesnt really matter if they are are blog comments or forum profiles.. so make sure to build some quality links in there to help give yourself a nice boost.

PR can be beneficial...you can sell links or link to some of your other sites (providing you don't leave a footprint such as same hosting IP).
For all of you saying pagerank doesnt matter I think your highly mistaken. Is why your whole backlinking strategy is to get links from high pr and one pr5 with ******** with move you up in the serps. So I think you guys have mistaken the value of pagerank still. I did a site for a client and they did a job for a client of theres who linked back from there website which was a pr6 and it not only improved the pagerank of there website but also moved them to the top 3 for there niche. This is why I am wanting to raise my pagerank. Thanks

This has been confusing me too. I have an ecommerce site that is 2 years old and in a seasonal niche. I have worked hard so far this year to get better rankings for my main keywords and was pleased to reach #1 for a few of my keywords a few weeks ago.I was even happier when the penguin came along and completely blasted my main competition out of the water leaving me at #1 with no serious rivals. However, I am still PR 0 and although I know it doesn't really matter as it is better to be #1 than have a higher PR I'm just a bit baffled as to why.
The site has pretty good content and plenty of product pages. I'm no expert at SEO so the links to the site have mainly been from service providers on BHW and a couple of senuke blasts etc. I'd like to try and raise the PR, partly to make me feel better and partly because it looks better if I ever come to sell the site. Any tips?

quality of content is what matter and the outbound links should be from the high pagerank sites
Just continue building good backlinks and you will eventually get it. PR is updated once every few months so you will also have to wait a bit.

I agree, for higher rankings, content quality and outbound links from niche related sites are a priority.

I can suggest to do back links to increase the page rank of any site. I have already tried this kind of link building. By article submission, BMR and other SEO works one can easily increase his page rank.
