Can someone please help me on what to do and not to do in seo?

Yes indeed.Most newbies reads a few blackhat techniques and implements them instantly,without even understanding how it works.First of all start with WhiteHat SEO and do EVERYTHING that you CAN manually,and don't run and buy tools like crazy.Learn how to do things yourself,and then you'll know how other tools works and the real value of them

It's actually very hard to say what works nowadays. Most threads you will find with backlinking strategies are before the latest Google update(s), that changed everything for many people here...
If I was you, I would focus purely on content in these times and wait couple more weeks to see what works and what not.

Its quite simple after all these panda update...DIVERSIFY, DIVERSIFY AND DIVERSIFY.

I have seen people depending completely on private blog network and they are no where now. They were making a killing on the internet with page 1 position for most competitve keywords and they are not in 500 now.

I am not an expert but I always beleived in diversifying and none of my website got affected with any of the google changes. Strond solid at Page #1 for all websites. There are some services over this website which are gold. check it out

So dont do automated blast like scrapebox/xrumer directly to your webisite.
Dont rely on one or couple of platform.
Dont do too much onpage optimization

Here's the problem. The SE guidelines are what helped lead to the "over-optimization" issue, as more people got good at them. Google has just hammered A LOT of sites with new and unique content, and good backlinks. This is also a BLACKHAT forum, so the proscription against BH is a non-starter here. And 'over-optimization' really means 'overly reliant on the whim of Google' faulty business model at the heart of white hat internet marketing (which is why the acronym for it is precisely, 'WHIM'). The real rule that works from here on is the BH one (at least what I follow, including for BH SEO): Forget the rules, forget the gurus, and slap back.
