Hi Everyone,

i am looking to acquire a new domain and the .co.uk version is gone. However the .com version is available, if i get the .com and update the country on webmaster tools will the .com rank as well as the .co.uk?

Thanks Martin

I'm in the UK too and have a .com domain for my site. It doesn't matter too much if the other SEO is done properly.

Yes it will just build backlinks from UK sites. I rank com in uk and vice versa.

ok great,

would i be better getting the kw.com versus the kwx.co.uk or k-w.co.uk?

I tend to stay away from dashes in domain names when possible.

I have a .co.uk domain but im building usa backlinks from web 2.0s do you think this will work too?

you should have no problem ranking a .com, in fact if anything it should be easier!

No it won't be easier,a country TLD is easier to rank.If 2 EMD's in the UK were treated exactly the same the .co.uk would rank higher all the time.Google gives the countries TLD an edge, and rightly so.The only country to buck this trend is the US were .com has an edge over .US.

Feel free to check out the serps for each country.

I rank all my sites in .co.uk (the web) and .co.uk (pages from UK) and Google US without having to change the target audience in webmaster tools. The secret is where the actual website is hosted. If you want to appear in Uk search engines then get a UK based hosting provider. All my sites appear in UK and US search engines without touching webmasters all by just having a UK host. Be carefull though i have been scammed by Indian hosting companys claiming to be in UK.

so if .co.uk is better, which should i be going for as i only have two options either kwx.co.uk or k-w.co.uk

If you want to target US aswell as UK then .com is fine if its just UK your looking at then .co.uk is fine. without the - is best but if thats not possible then stick with -.

Yes it will rank. I have a site ranking in a pretty competitive niche with a .com

Good Luck

this is all good advice, but also a little confusing with so many different opinions. am i best to just go for all three and use it as a research exercise?
