How do i pay Cutoms fee?

I am importing jewelry in US(NYC). Last time i did the 'test' order under $100. Everything went smooth. So now i want to make $1K order. Called customs, talked to IMPORT SPECIALIST he told what % i have to pay for this kind of jewelry etc. What do i do next? When i am paying this %? After package arrives to NYC? Would somebody call me, can't understand how it works...
tried to ask IMPORT SPECIALIST about this his answer " you can hire somebody from us to fill the documents". He is now willing to help.

Pretty basic stuff for ecommerce guys, just don't know it yet

The price of the order doesn't really matter. It's the size of the package and what's on the label. If you tell you supplier to send it as a gift and put it's value around $100 or so, you shouldn't have any problems. I used to order from China a lot and never had problems. I also sent a few packages to Brazil.

bulldawg88 did you ship on your name? Or on you company/business name? I know that the chance of my package being inspected on the customs is low(ordering not from China makes it even lesser from what i've learnt). But what is the penalty if they would? I am planning this as long term project and want to do everything legit way.

I shipped it to my name. If you're dealing in counterfeits and replicas, you could face a civil suit if customs inspects your packages. Of course, there's always plausible deniability that you didn't know they were fake. If they do inspect it and it didn't clear, you'll be notified to go pick it up. Then, they will hit you with import taxes or a copyright issue. If they hit you with import taxes, just pay them. If they hit you with copyright, deny you knew they were fakes and ask them if they can destroy them for you. Of course, they will and you will more than likely get off by playing innocent.

Don't even sweat it. This is business, and we don't make money by paying for shit when we don't have to.

The "customs specialist" is selling you something you don't need. The forms and declarations are already handled by your overseas supplier's shipping agent. The majority of them will declare a fraction of the value without even asking you (again. this is business. they assume you don't like burning cash.)

Even if something is rediculously misdeclared, you can handle that rare hiccup on your own or with your supplier's assistance. If shipping by UPS/FEDEX/DHL they handle brokerage for you to handle those hiccups on your behalf.

Generally, you are invoiced for any duties owed. Whether or not you get charged seems ot be luck of the draw. One $30,000 shipment passes through customs duty free, 2 days later a small $1000 shipment gets levied a tax. *shrug*

At our prior location UPS insisted on having a check upon delivery, but again it wasn't every time. That was the only time I've ever had such a headache, so it may just be that one area is retarded.
