Can I rank this KW?

I got a keyword related to health.EMD .net domain is available. Adword shows following results for [Exact] search.
Competition - Low
Global monthly search - 3600
Local monthly search - 1900
CPC - $3.16

There are 55,900 search results on google. But what I worry is the top 4 ranks.
1.en.wikipedia.org/wiki
2.emedicine.medscape.com
3.ghr.nlm.nih.gov
4.nlm.nih.gov

Can I have a chance to rank at first or second place for this KW?

Sure you can. Anything is possible with enough effort and money. If you are offering something those 4 sites aren't offering and you are #5, you will still get the traffic that you want.

Yes. Pull up market samurai and see what the other sites are doing for that keyword. Check how many backlinks they have, how old their domains are, and etc. Remember that competition on the google keyword tool is not telling your SEO competition. It is telling you ADWORDS competition. In other words, how many people are bidding on that keyword. Nonetheless, it is still a good thing to check.

Eh... Not really true. Sure with enough money you could get up pretty high, but beating .gov websites is no easy task. Additionally, trying to beat Wikipedia with a new domain is going to be damn hard. He could be offering a free $5 for just visiting his site and not get much traffic because, most Google Searchers (roughly 50%-60%) are going to click on the first link. Then another small percentage will go for the second and third links. The rest will either or leave and do another search/end their search, or continue down the list, which is where he could receive small amounts of traffic.

OP. The reason MNS are successful is because of the high SEO rank that is usually pretty easy to achieve. In your case it's going to be tough, extremely tough to rank first or second for that keyword.

You can rank with an Exact Match Domain.

However since the top 4 sites are authority sites, analyze those pages carefully. Do they have the keyword in title? Is the content right on keyword topic or is it just a related topic?
Google tends to rank authority sites when there are no sites built tightly on keyword topic. In such case you should be able rank easily. However if the wikipedia and gov site pages are 100% relevant to the keyword, then you might find it difficult to rank.

Also, the Competition (law) that the google keyword tool shows is the SERP competition. It is the adwords advertiser competition. This number has no significance when you want to rank in natural results. However low competition is a bad indication as far as adsense revenue is concerned.

For a low search volume keyword, if the top four are authority sites, I'd ignore it and move on to other keywords. Even if I have an EMD, it will take enormous amount of work to compete...

Choose another keyword, because low adwords competition won't bring you decent money for your effort.

The other option would be to do a youtube video 3 to 5 mins max and direct them to your site for a full review of the product or service you are offering. With under 60k in search results, I bet you could rank a Youtube video in a week or sooner.

You definitely can rank and beat those websites (I have for the health niche). But you should also check other factors as well like whether other non-authority websites are ranking in the top 10 or top 20, how high the demand is for those keywords in Alexa, etc.
