I'm curious about this as I believe it may have been done to my website. Can a website get penalized if a competitor bought a huge amount of spammy backlinks and used my website as the target with the anchor text that I am optimized for?

I'm hoping this won't screw my rank up.

Recently yes can be penalized. If it is new domain it is a lot easier to get it penalized.

Why you wanna earn money by doing bad to others ?

Winners will always make their own paths ...!!

Read the OP. He had this done to him.

Yes, you can be penalized. but depending on the age of your site, it may not phase you

Ok so it depends on how old my site is and if I have other trusted links from good sources. That's good to know my site has been around for a while but i'm in a very competitive serp and i'm ranking well right now. I want to go up not down.

Thanks.

If you have been around for awhile and have quality backlinks, this shouldn't make or break you. Granted, it could, depending on how badly your competitor blasted you. Sometimes it can even boost your ranking.

A lot of this is relative to your particular situation
