A high ranking will get you good traffic (assuming you are hitting the right keywords). On the other hand, traffic doesn't ensure you have a high ranking when it comes to the keywords because they might be finding your site from social networking sites or advertisements. If I have to choose which one, I would choose popularity over ranking since rankings can come easily when you're popular already.
