I always have avoided Go Daddy because ive heard people being annoyed by them. I broke down and made an account threw them though because I was getting a domain that was being transferred to me and was told Go Daddy would be the easiest. No big deal I thought.
I get a phone call today from Go Daddy asking if I had a few minutes to talk about my account, thinking something was wrong I said ok sure. The person called me to ask me what I was using my domain for? REALLY? THIS IS ANY OF THEIR BUSINESS? Is it just me or does it seem totally ludacris for a domain company to call their customers just to ask them what their plans were to do with their domains?
They are calling to talk you into web-hosting and building your site for you. The $2.50 domain registration is a loss-leader, and a means to acquire your phone number in order to make that solicitation. It happened to me just yesterday.
I took the telemarketing phone call as an opportunity to complain about the fact that I couldn't find the spot online where you input your Coupon Code. Had I not called GoDaddy and registered the domain name on the phone, I might have clicked the button to "complete" the transaction, hoping to find the Coupon Code entry point on the next screen. It would not have been there, and I would have paid full-price for a domain name from a company that I didn't really want to do business with, and then would have had to suffer both the telemarketing solicitation AND trying to get the Coupon Code honored after the transaction was already complete.
And I don't think any of that Coupon Code difficulty was an accident, either.
So I told Mr. GoDaddy Telemarketer ("animal porn", lol...) that he probably didn't know what an "MFA" site was (he didn't), and if he did, GoDaddy probably wouldn't help me to build one, even IF they knew how.
I could tell he didn't know what "MFA" was, but he thought it was REALLY REALLY bad, maybe worse than animal porn, and he got off the phone with me as fast as he could, in case the FBI was listening or I was contagious.
I've made a decision to create a list of domains I might like to own, and then as each of these companies do these super-specials, I pick up the most valuable domain on the list, as part of my ongoing efforts at making money. I've registered domains with GoDaddy, Hostgator and Reigister.com so far. My phone is trashed anyways. I get phone calls from telemarketers constantly anyways; a few more aren't going to make much difference.
I wonder if you could use a forwarded number to do this stuff. Can Google Voice forward?
