Anyone have any advice? I run a local business and it would make much more sense for me to try to rank #1 for Google Places than for regular organic search results.

I'm getting customers to leave reviews (have like 10 already), uploading pictures, videos, details and so on.

Are there any services people offer for this kind of thing? I'd pay someone to submit my business to many business directories.

I work for a company that specializes in google local. I have set up many accounts and have good experience. A lot depends on your competition. Are you a lawyer or a shoe maker? Is your business located in the wilderness or in a dense concrete jungle? The more competitive your niche the more difficult it will be.

Look at your competitors and see what they are doing, that's a good place to start. Hope this helps.

google places is closely related to the organic results so if you want to rank high in google places, then you need to rank high in organic results...

In addition to submission in business directories,you need to add more citations in google places to let your business have more exposure.

The basic steps are: analyzing your competition, building content for your GP listing (e.g. reviews) and promoting your GP listing (e.g. citations).

If you have time to learn and do it yourself, then there are good courses in the Downloads section.

If you're too busy running your business, then find someone experienced in Google Places and reputable. Remember that there's plenty of people selling SEO services who know nothing about SEO. Ask any suitable candidates for previous work experience and work references, and ideally they would've been recommended by someone you trust (not someone random of a forum).
