Platform affecting ranking?

I just read this in another thread and wanted to pick up on it:

seoguru13 said: "Diversify your platforms too; wordpress or some script can be a factor too."

It's something I've been wondering about for a while but as the thread in question was about the demise of BMR I thought I'd start a new thread about it.

I've noticed that BHW is full of references to Wordpress. Almost everywhere that there's discussion of web2.0s or MNS, Wordpress seems to pop into the conversation as if there are no alternatives.

I know WP is nice and easy to set up a quick site with, and it has good plugins for SEO and whatnot, but is there not a danger that if every blackhatter is using WP, the search engines are going to start associating sites that appear to be built on that platform with spammy sites?

Maybe I'm talking bollocks. Maybe Big G can't tell what platform a site's built on. But I'd be interested to hear if anyone has thoughts on this.

WordPress is so widely talked about because of it's popularity in use. While many seo marketers use wordpress, so does a large part of the personal and commercial world.

Let's look at the stats...
- 15% of the most trafficked sites on the internet run on WordPress.
- 22% of every new domains purchased in the U.S are running WordPress.

While G does have the capability to know your system platform, that should not affect you.
These are reasons why your WordPress site may have gotten hit by G:

1. You probably threw up a quick WP site without any on-page SEO
2. You have a G analytics account that manages all of your marketing sites
3. You have set up G webmaster tools that links your sites
3. All of your sites run on the same IP or the IP's are linked in association
4. You backlinks consist of junk articles or cheap automated backlinks

While there may be millions of reasons why your site would be hit, these are the most common.

I suppose what I was thinking was, what if G believed that those 22% of new domains contained a high proportion of the shittiest, spammiest new content?

Like I say, I've got no theory to push on this one. I just wondered what people would say and I really appreciate your input
