Inspiring - a low quality site competes against multi billion dollar brands using blackhat

Hey guys -- Eppie here. Just wanted to clarify a few points in this discussion.

First, the site I audited in this case study dropped in the SERPs around the end of January. My take is that I'd never out an actively ranking site, but once it's dead I have no problem dissecting it. Some of you will disagree with that, but I believe it's a fair stance to take on the issue of "outing" a site.

Second, to the one or two guys who took issue with the fact that the post promotes Link Detective -- it's a completely free service with no limitations. I'm not making a dollar off of it.

Finally, I'm no SEO moralist -- I think it was an impressive achievement to rank that site and, quite frankly, I've ranked plenty of "garbage" sites of my own (though never for a keyword as competitive as these guys pursued). Good on them for getting their money. If Google doesn't like it, it's their responsibility to fix their algorithm to rank what they highlight in the search quality guidelines.

As for calling the site "garbage," when I say "garbage" sites, I mean sites that Google wouldn't want showing up in their SERPs. It's not my personal judgment of the site's value but is based on what Google's put out as their guidelines for search quality.

I know some of you will still think I'm a dick, but I just wanted to clear the air and get my side of the story out there.

I learnt a lot from your post, and the site that you mentioned in it, and for that I appreciate it. As for link detective it's a great supplement to work alongside the OSE reports, I bet the moz team are thinking "why didn't we do that" I had a few problems at the beginning but is now working fine.

How can we get a FULL list of his backlinks? I want to fully analyze it.

What gets me is how much manual work was involved in SEO, yet they were unwilling/unable to create a reasonably good site which could pass a manual review. It must have cost a lot in both time and money to rank that site. Creating a good quality site would have taken a tiny fraction of the SEO resources, so it was very stupid of them/him/her NOT to take that extra bit of time/money/effort in order to make a quality, truly useful site which would pass a manual review.

It's not exactly an 'extra' bit of time and money. :-)

The only way he'd pass manual review is setting up his own insurance company or having a site like money supermarket which is an immense amount of work.

Great read.

Also, thanks for making link detective free. The analyzing of the links was quite confusing but having the link detective makes the task achievable for the everyday joe like myself.

I'm very impressed by how this site ranked for such a competitive KW. more than $40 per click? that must have been some heavy paychecks!

One day we will all be there (or at least 10 of us :D )

It is kind of funny how so many people here are saying why didn't he try and keep the site up longer.. It is pretty obvious this guy was just generating a list and a very valuable one to boot. He always new he only had months at best. The site is gone yes but that guy is Still BANKING!

A list would have been smart, but this guy didn't built a list. He's just put a simple zipcode->ppc on the site. The site's not run by a marketing genius, just a guy who's good at SEO.

Im sure this site still made $XXX,XXX as it was ranked 2 for a good amount of time for one of the most toughest keywords in the industry. Such a simple site probably made him mass money before the review

Wow I bet the site owner is pissed after reading an article by SEOMoz with HIS website being snitched on. I know I would...

First thing that came into my mind when reading this article was : what a pure genius must the owner be. Then I found out he didn't build a list ....
