I'm planning on putting some ebooks up for sale.

How do i protect it properly?

By sending them out manually by email instead of posting a download link. If you must post a download link (click bank or whatever) then you need to change it frequently. Name it something random (name your directory & thank you page this way too), and be sure you include a blank index.html in the directory that holds your ebook.

The simple way to do this onthe same domain is the following:

1. You don't want your download file found by search engines so you must put in the robots.txt file to deny access to the folder it is in.
2. People know that download directories are mentioned in the robots.txt file, so when trying to steal a download they will type in yoursite.com/robots.txt and look at the results - they will then check all of the search engine access denied files and folders looking for the download - so put it in a folder within the folder you disallow access to, and put an index page within that folder too so that the subfolders can't be seen.

I mean are these more secure for file protection?

I would seriously look into an automated method like DLGUARD, which automates assigning a unique download link to each person. Additionally it automatically deactives usernames/pw .
