Google has plans for major overhaul to search engine

Over the next few months, Google's search engine will not just be showing our normal links that we are searching but it will also present more facts and direct answers to queries at the top of the search-results page. The changes to search are among the biggest in the company's history and could affect millions of websites that rely on Google's current page-ranking results.

What are your thoughts on this?

I suppose the sites ranked first and second for certain search terms will see a noticeable decrease in traffic... what I'd suggest would be to target terms that are less statistic-oriented, e.g. "Lake Tahoe tourism" rather than "Lake Tahoe depth."

Overiding everything they do technically they are first and foremost a company that makes billions in revenue. So rest assured they will not do anything to dilute the gravy train - the cash revenue!

Won't affect more than 10-20% of searches and they already do this so its not big news. Don't worry about it, like I said, they already do this now, so its not much of a change at all.

Yes they have already started doing it. Go and check you ip address and you would be able to see it at the top of the page and now no need to open a website to do it.

I guess Big G hurted the top 3 website's sentiments the most but not to worry as they won't be doing it on a large scale. Direct answers would mean no openings of new page for searching an answers and no clicks on the ads.
They will kill adsense this way which they surely will not want to do that.

Most searches don't require an exact answer so for the majority of searches, this doesn't apply.

But if you ask, how tall is Mt Everest?...and google gives you the answer, there is no harm in it...

"[Insert whatever you are selling here] reviews" won't hurt you either.

Reinventing the Google search engine will hopefully be for better outcome. Google is always admired for its business strategies. Maybe it can convince Yahoo! to follow this plan when it turns out to be good.

I still believe this will have affect on lots of marketing potential for website masters. But I hope Google knows what they are doing but ever since the privacy policy update it seems dire for google.

I wouldn't worry about this as they already do it now, so if it doesn't affect you now, then it won't affect you tomorrow.

this makes sense b/c a specific question was asked, so google wants to provide a specific answer...

if your search is a query based search then the results tend to be answer based, if that makes sense.

so if you search, who/what/where/how/can etc etc

then you tend to get yahoo answers, reviews, forums etc.

if you search for best loan, car hire, buy dvd online then you get the usual seo flooded market that we are all trying to break into.

nothing changed there, move along.
