Attacking competition, legal?

I've been thinking about attacking competition with some bad links, but before I start I would like to be sure about some things.
1. What is the best method to attack competition and send their sites at least few spots back?
2. Is it legal?

The reason why I do this is that for some reason I'm able to get almost any site to the first page, but almost never to first place and I'm getting quite desperate especially now where no one is sure what really works.

I am not 100% sure on this but I wouldn't have thought there would be any laws stopping you from doing so.

Not legal but you will for sure be attacking YOURSELF. Invest that time in making quality links to YOUR site.

Even if this worked and you managed to get to the top of the hill cause you knifed all people above you in the back... remember... there would be plenty of people behind you with a knife.

Don't lower them to below your level, keep working your sites until they rise above the competition.

Firstly, please read BHW rules about posting this sort of think. Not suppose to happen.

Secondly, practically EVERY ISP, Registrar, Webhost and others have in their fine print legal jargon that says you can't use their service to interfere with anyone else. So if caught you'll lose those services.

Thirdly, if you cost a large business money and they can prove it was you then you can be held liable for the damages you cause including loss of income or loss of potential income. This could easily be manipulated into very large numbers.

Lastly, comes criminal charges. If you're found interfering with someone's business maliciously you can face criminal charges much like hackers face. It's against the law to deface or maliciously cause harm to a business in most jurisdictions. Again if they find out you purposely damaged their business they could ask for a criminal investigation and charges to be brought.

Improve your skills and win the game by the rules. Cheaters never win in the long haul.

It's one thing to 'mess' with your competition without declaring it; silence is golden...
...But it's another thing entirely to ask on a public forum if it's a good idea.

Most of us here, the vast majority of us here, beat our competition by making our products better, optimizing more efficiently, and, you know, with marketing.

I can't imagine you're in college yet, so I'll be very polite and not do anything that will cause myself trouble by forcefully outlining just how dangerous of a position you've put yourself in by being silly enough to look into these sort of tactics. Threads upon threads have been removed and users upon users banned for having your ambitions.

And as for your avatar...I hope it's ironic...Because I've gotten several ipods for free online. Those sites you're joking about were real.

I agree that using tools and methods to focus on your own site is much more productive, however I'm not really sure why these types of scenarios get such a negative backlash. Is it because the #1 spot could be yours (other forum members)?

Yeah I was also quite surprised it is such big deal even I just asked a question about it. We here are spamming like crazy, hijacking site visitors, using bots, faking just everything.. really doing lot of stuff many people would consider really bad and then this is so big problem. But anyway it looks like wrong strategy so I will not lose any time with it.

Think about this: we will all try to make porn links or spammed once to our competition, it will be better? Or do you think someone that worked to get on the 1st spot don't have the tools to play dirty too?
