How Three Germans are Copying Startups and Making Billions

I love that article, especially the art aspect since I'm a high school art teacher.

The business world copies each other all of the time. Burger King copies McDonalds, etc.

My SEO friends tell me that I should copy "Textlink Brokers" and put my own spin on it, but wow...it seems very involved. The owner does everything very legal.

Yeah..."genius," and pretty much everything that's wrong with the business culture today.

Copy a working idea = success. Duh. This isn't new, it just takes a special kind of person with abysmally little integrity to do this.

If they actually innovated, there could be an argument for their ingenuity. Facebook copied other social network and ad platforms. Google copied search engines. But they made their respective enterprises better than what was out there already (myspace and yahoo).

These German shills are backstabbers and cowards that don't want to speak on record (read the article).

Sociopaths dude. Civilization needs less of these kinds of people.

I agree that just copying is not the best way to go about it without innovating. However, businesses like this will not succeed in the long term because of that very thing...they can't innovate so they will fail as others progress.

I met one of them.
Was offered a job, declined it. They work too much, 12 hours/day easy, weekends.
Office is shit (for that project).

The minute you walk in you know this is not permanent, everything is a mess, just build this fast build it boom sell, goodbye.

If you guys think anything is original...you need to watch this short documentary called "Everything is a remix"

http://vimeo.com/25380454

The couple down the street had a baby...copycats.

Even everything is a remix is a remix.

Ecclesiastes 1:9
"What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun."

Everything is a remix was shown to me by the most faux-artistic types ever, on par with that motivational that tells faux-artistic types to steal inspiration wherever they can. Yeah, sure, I get the idea...But that's why you'll see dozens of paintings that have no soul to them and 1 that "stole" an idea but has a generative element in it.

da Vinci totally remixed the shadows created by the sun. Plagiarizer.

'Boiler Room' for sure. Great movie, but only to show an example of how not to do business. Make things better, improve upon society, that's what lasts.

Well they're making bank huh... it's not like they are "backstabbing" their partners - in a way they're making their startups better in that they're expanding into new markets.

I had read about them sometime back

They copy US sites that are successful and push them on the international market.

Their exit strategy is competing with the original site, until they are bought out.

That's a good point, they are providing value to the customers in the new markets who aren't able to take advantage of the new idea yet. The groupon copy in europe saved a lot of people money and promoted a lot of businesses, something that groupon wasn't able to offer at the time.

All the haters on these 3 brothers are just the ones who haven't hit bingo! when making a copy of something successful. Remember how many tried to copy Fiverr? #failsquad.

I love how this whole forum is based on learning/copying/and twisting pre-existing methods. All these brothers did was dominate the copying part. And to add to that, i highly doubt that you could do it yourselves and just choose to not be millionaires becuase of your "artistic integrity"

Lot of judegment there mate...you must be very original

There is a reason there is a very popular saying don't try to reinvent the wheel, if you want be the bes,t learn from the bestt, do exactly what they do and you should get the same results
Everywhere you look in life things are copied and improved on, there really are no original ideas if you look back far enough in time you will see someone is already come up with the concept or idea

It's very nice they did what they wanted to do and made loads of money, and I'm happy they're happy.

As for being original, the passage from Ecc. states that nothing is original.

My problem with these three brothers is that they're being acknowledged and celebrated for generating spun content. They get bought out because that's the only legal avenue to stop them internationally; their parents were corporate lawyers so they knew what was up. Loopholes are fun for a specific type of person, and rarely are those types of people mentally healthy.

Reading about the atmosphere in their company, how they treated their employees, and how they handled business deals is rather sad. It's easy to make money when scruples are an afterthought.

Everyone on BHW takes ideas and implements them using their own twists. Have you ever heard of the clones these Germans made? No, of course not, because they were just 25% unique articles.

Their advantage was doing this overseas where the long arm of US law couldn't get them (bet they could now adays). They're very uninspiring folk who will disappear into obscurity. Main thing that holds others back from doing what they did is something called integrity. But hey, if they're happy, I'm happy.
