On Site SEO: All keywords pointing to 1 page or Multiple Keyword optimised pages?

At the moment I'm creating a new site which is targeting some very similar keywords.. Let's say niche is 'dog training' the keywords would be as follows:

dog training
fast dog training
real dog training
how to train a dog
how to train dogs
how can I train a dog

So you see it's all pretty much the same thing so I could easily just point all these keywords to one page, however:

I'm worried that I may loose out on the benefit from on page SEO, I mean I can't have 6 H1 tags on one page can I?

I was planning on creating a unique page for each individual keyword and then just writing out the same content but in different words so all content is unique.. Then I can target specific keywords at their own tailor made pages..

What are your thoughts on this? I'm very interested to know!

So if I understand correctly, you want to create backlinks to either one page or multiple pages on your money site by using the above keyword phrases as anchor text for those backlinks?

If that's the case there's still a number of thing you're going to want to consider. First I would consider how many backlinks you're planning on creating for each keyword phrase and the associated PR/OBL of the domains from which those backlinks will be directed. Tons and tons of backlinks from garbage (low PR/high OBL) sites is generally not best practice - it will work to an extent, but Google will probably make the connection that all these backlinks are coming from spam-filled sites and deindex you or something like that. I would recommend a slow, steady approach to building backlinks to your site from high PR/low OBL sites.

As for organizing your site, I would also recommend using multiple pages for different keywords (unless they're REALLY similar i.e. "training dog" & "training dogs" - then they can share the same page). You're going to want to spread your backlinks across multiple URLs on your money site, again in order to minimize the backlinks being deindexed. You'll hear this a lot: Google is smart. Meaning their crawlers are smart and know how to detect poorly managed black hat link building.

On the other hand, if your money site doesn't mean much to you, and you just want traffic now now now, go ahead and spam the hell out of low PR / high OBL blogs, etc. to just one url (the landing page) on your money site.

edit: after re-reading your initial question, maybe I can offer more pertinent advice: if you have a list of keyword phrases you want to optimize for that's say 50 lines long, try grouping them into similar clumps (i.e. Group 1 = "dog training" "dogs training" "training dog" "training dogs", Group 2 ="dog behavior" "good dog" "good dogs" "obedient dogs", etc.) and set those phrases up in the meta tags for each page. Then create unique content for each group and place in the <p> </p> of your pages. Maybe set the <h1> to be the most highly-searched keyword phrase for that group.

if you only have a list of keyword phrases that's say 5 lines long, I would consider expanding that list, or just settling for one page.

Think I'm going to split if up into different pages. Main thing I was thinking about was this:

All my keywords are literally about the exact same topic, they are different in their layout though, for example:

How to bake a cake
Baking a cake instructions

So you see the content is literally the same (but reworded) Just wondering if I'm wasting time making two seperate pages or if actually it will be beneficial as I'll get more traffic from specific keywords..

But after doing some of my own analysis of my top competitor I see that he is linking most of these similar terms to his home page and that he is getting eaten up by other sites who are using EMD of the keywords and have it in their title..

Indeed... EMD will benefit you being indexed for that exact phrase. Meta tags and title are the most fundamental methods of on-site optimization, aside from content keyword density.

I guess the solution you're looking at is to use multiple pages. I'm curious as to whether you can actually have "too much of a good thing" so to speak and be deindexed/otherwise penalized for making so many pages about essentially identical keywords, like:

http://www.website.com/dog-train.html
http://www.website.com/dogs-train.html
... and so on

so if anyone wants to chime in about that, I would be very curious to know more

Having a site with separate pages all targeting the same KWs or very similar variations is not going to get you very far these days.

First, Google will most likely flag your site as a low quality, thin site because all of your content pages will be on the same thing.

Second, the visitors to your site will most likely not like your site because there isn't much information there, and all of the information is basically the same. You don't to have separate pages on your site that are basically re-hashes of the other pages.

I would recommend targeting multiple KWs on one page if they are all the same or similar variation like your case.

Also, you will want to have at least 10-20 pages of good content covering different areas of dog training if you want your site to do well in the SERPs and with your actual targeted audience.

how to lose weight naturally - this actually has different content
how can I lose weight
is there a way to lose weight

Problem is 3 out of those 5 has really really high searches so I don't really want to lose out on the traffic. Also the competition varies quite a lot between keywords going from easy to hard..

If I was to only use one page then I guess it would be clever to use the term with the highest searches and also lowest competition as the H1 and title of the page? Then include a lot of the other variations as bolded text in the p> tags and set a load of links to the page with the different keywords as anchor text? Should do it..

Manual review is not necessarily required. That's what Panda and all the recent updates have been about - changing their algorithm so that it can identify which sites to rank and where based off of their latest changes regarding quality, authority, etc.

Having 25,000 pages of content may be alright as long as they are all quality pages. The good thing is that you don't need to have thousands of pages to rank.

Thanks to Panda, quality pulls much more weight in rankings than quantity.

Also, keep in wide that if you have a lot pages that Google sees as not quality and flags you for these pages, it will affect your entire site.
