Domain expire Jan 15, why not available?

Hello,

I'm trying to get a domain name that's similar to the one I own. I've had the .net version for years and would like to finally buy the dot com.

They've never had a website to it, someone just purchased the domain in hopes of selling it one day.

It says it's been owned since Jan 15 2001 and expired Jan 15 2012.

Why isn't it available?

Either way, after domains expire, most companies will still hold onto it to give the owner one last chance to get it. Usually it's a 45 day grace period and once they enter that, the owner must pay a penalty to get it back before it gets dropped and snatched up by resellers.

After a domain expires:

40 Day Grace Period for Owner to pay up
30 Day Redemption Period where Owner can pay a premium to keep domain
5 Day Locked - Deletion Period where Registrar sends ICANN deletion request. ICANN will delete the domain after the 5th day. Domains after dropped by ICANN can be registered by anyone - first come first serve.

So the soonest a domain is available for public purchase is on the 76th day after the domain expires. If dot com or net it will "drop" between 1300 and 1400 hrs CST on 76th day. If the domain you're after expired 01/15/2012 then look for it in the drop on 03/31/2012 1300 - 1400.

What registrars vary from the 75 day schedule? I'm a reseller for 4 large ones and all the ones I work with use this schedule. I would like to know what registrars are different.

Why don't you backorder the domain using Snapnames or pool if its that much important? You won't have to worry about checking the availability every day.

No, most registrars adhere to this schedule. The ones that don't are ones you probably shouldn't deal with anyway.

if its godaddy they auction it and you can get it sooner that 75 days, otherwise it freshdrop or whatever.

not like im implying you should ever buy anything from godaddy
