Say I'm looking to rank for "blue widgets".

Naturally I want to buy the EMD, bluewidgets.com.

If it is taken, is widgetsblue.com still as effective?

Anyone have any experience with ranking a re-arranged EMD like that?

Thanks!

I would also like to know if anyone has experience with this, I've grabbed myself a bunch of domains but am yet to put this to the test, I think u would get some benefit, not the same as a emd but better than a random domain

Not effective at all. widgetsblue would only give you a boost for "widgets blue", and if 100% of the search volume is for "blue widgets" and nobody is actually typing widgets blue, you get 0 boost for EMD.

Surely u would get a bit of a boost for having the keyword in the domain, is there no boost for a widgets-blue domain then?

get a catchy domain name. the EMD factor isnt any longer as big as it used to be. no problem to outrank any emd with better backlinking and content (!).

Wouldn't you still get a BROAD search boost from the domain name? If somebody searched for "Widgets Blue" and the site would be "Blue Widgets" it should still get more benefits from the name than a site with no keywords in the domain at all right?

Let's take an example (and no, it's definitely not my site), search for:

mobile fun
fun mobile

The top site is the same both times and in both instances the keywords are highlighted. Albeit, for the second one it does show the site links. Also, search Adwords for both phrases. It shows the search volume for both. It seems like in Google's eyes they are both the same, even when the order is mixed up.

I don't know the answer to your question, but it's possible that Google might be fine with a reverse order, considering the above. As monchichi mentioned, though, backlinking and content.

Ive got a few sites that il be testing this on, emd's definitely get a big boost, there's a end ranking 3rd in my niche with 30 different class c's, I have more than 1000, I managed to get the .net EMD in the week for $800, hoping to get it ranked asap

use something after your keyword like bluewidgetsonline, bluewidgetsblog etc.

You would get zero EMD boost. There is a slight chance you would get a boost, for instance, if you have the keyword in your domain and you get listed in BOTW or yahoo directory, and they happen to add the keyword in as anchor text just because its part of your domain. But this is a very slight bonus (if at all) because part of panda 3.3 I think is anchor text overoptimization rules that are more strict.
