What keywords are localized by Google

How do we find out which keywords get local listings in google. This is very valuable, and we know about plumbers, dentists, but is there a listing somewhere that shows more obscure niches?

Im using local directories/yellow pages (mostly online) to find my niches.. look around in the download section, there are a lot of cources on methods for niche discovery. just use your brain to see if it is a "local" niche

When you say you're scouring yellow pages, what exactly are you looking for? Silly question but small amount of listings/little competition, etc?

I look at google results. Some keywords that I think should be localized are not, some are. So would be great to have a 'local scrapebox'...

@OP just think outside the box and try to search something a regular costumer would search for. Or use a keyword scraper.

Are you referring to people who do not search with the city name as part of the keyword?

Jericho, thanks, that is a great list!

necro, the problem is if you search for "auto dealer" it is localized, but "best auto dealer" is not. So it is a hit and miss thing. One could do a keyword scraper, is there one that detects GP, or we have to write one (not hard to write in php). I was hoping there is something out there, otherwise the longer tail keywords are a bit hard, but certainly can start from the root keywords like provided by Jericho.

[edit] I suppose one could focus on the root words, and then do a google keyword tool run and find related keywords, and then go through them one by one to see which ones are GP'ed. I was hoping there is a specialized keyword scraper tool for that (I think there are some paid ones...).

Any software outthere to Bulk search for These keywords + city? Ive been doing it in bulk in Google Places, have a spreadsheet laid out lol but I would like a bit more info about the competition [not the CPC, but how many sites are ranking, what the #1 sites r etc].

Google Places Takeover (can find it here, or find it on the web) has a review of all such tools. They are not free, but accomplish what you asking and more -- for example citations is a big thing, and they gather that info.
