Should I go for the EMD and age for ranking?

Got a product to sell, and I want to try and rank a website for it! Haven't been serious about ranking before, so would like some input.

What I want to rank for is two words.

Global Searches, +300k and Local Searches, +130k.
Exact is 10k global and 5k local.
Search Results show 60 million.
Putting buy in front of the two words, puts the results up over 300 million.

Any chance a "n00b" could get page 1?

The EMD is obviously taken, but looking at (word)EMD or EMD(word).

But there is also an EMD(word) on auction cheap, that is +2 years old. Not seeing any history, but if I wanted to get some black links going faster.. the older domain might handle it better? The word is abc though.. EMDabc.. eh.. if y'all think the older domain name would help.. I guess I could make that work somehow, LOL.

I wouldn't be focused on organic traffic to solely make sales, I have a few places to get traffic from to start, but the goal would be to rank well so organic traffic does come.

So possible or totally dreaming?

On a site note: Or for trying to backlink build quick, would an even older domain name be better with just a neat sounding name for the product, but not an EMD? Some sites without the EMD in it are on page 1.

EMD isn't everything, it depends what you are trying to do with it.

if your trying to build a company / brand name off this website, I would avoid the EMD.

is 300k searches a month, broad or exact? For some one new to SEO I would advice staying away from it. It could take years for you to even get close to page 1 (unless you happened to hit a gold mine and no one else has found this word)

to give you a example the term "shoes" is searched globally about 1million a month and locally 450,000 (this is one of the most competitive keywords out there!)

I would check your competition, see domain age, backlinks, onsite optimization etc.

My recommendations is to keep reading and learning and in the mean time, you could go for long tail keywords related to your product and eventually scale it up over the years.

EMD is not a mandatory thing to rank #1. However, it does help you in ranking high. Word+EMD or EMD+Word wouldn't give you much EMD benefit so it doesn't matter which one you choose. Go for the one which sounds better and looks more appropriate for your website especially when your main source wouldn't be organic traffic.

Since, my plan of traffic is posting on some other sites I have some "cred" on, so I can't do that too often, or else it'll get spammy. So hoped to add in organic traffic as the weeks went by.

An easy to remember / catchy name does sound like a good idea.

As long as it is .com, .net or .org its alright because search engines treat these extensions pretty much the same. However, if your website have more visitors that type-in the domain then .com is still the better option.

5k local is still a little tough for a newbie but definitely doable it would just take some time and money.

You can check backlinks at a lot of sites (i use a mixture of backlinkwatch and opensiteexplorer)

you might want to try adwords as well and see how well the market is (you can get 100$ adwords cards for free or a small $ all over BHW)

It's arguable about domain age, from my experiences domain age does matter and google tends to look at the age of the domain and how long its registered for because it looks much less spammy, some might disagree.

for branding I would definitely stick with a .com - but you are correct .net and .org are also TLD and wont effect your SEO campaign.

Buying(EMD).org (.com and .net are taken)

Searches Global, 8,000 and Local, 4,500.
Exact Global, 100, Local, 60.
Search Results 90 million, with quotes, 400k.

Although most of the sites I see ranked, are the ones who rank for buy and would be my competitors. So maybe not a winner?

Do have an Adwords account, maybe with about $40 in it. Too old to get a coupon unfortunately.

100 global and 60 local is really low, I would try to aim for about 1k local a month and little competition. You would only be getting on average 40 visits a month if your lucky with that low exact searches.

you figure with 1k searches and a 40% click through rate if your #1 for your search term = 400 visits a month

You almost always want to go off exact searches over broad.

Also make make sure your URL is not copyrighted (for whatever product your selling)

Instead of looking at the number of search results for the keyword, examine the top 10 ranking sites for that keyword. I have 85 micro niche sites, and I swear the factor that matters least in getting them ranked is the number of search results for that keyword.

Using something like Seoquake, Travis Traffic, or Market Samurai (if it ever works again) and check the strength of the Top 10. Do they have the keyword in the URL, Title, H1 tags? Are they authority sites? What's the PR of the sites? These are the questions you need to be answering for yourself.

Used SEO Doctor, Backlink Watch, and Alexa. Umm.. the noob way? All free tools, and I think it looks maybe promising to hit top 10? Some are missing tags or have too many and don't have a ton of links.

The phrase I'd like to rank for buy(EMD) has 2300 exact searches.

Hm... buy(EMD)1 is free.. if what I know about seo is right, the 1 won't matter. Could rank for EMD and buy(EMD).
