Hi guys,

I'm finding real difficult to find what keywords are targeting my competitiors. The thing is I have a website with general niche from "men hairstyles 2012" to "dexter season 3 episode 2" (these are just examples, btw I don't know if dexter has 3 seasons haha).

So what tool should I use to see from where my competitors gets traffic and then I will know what to target and outrank them?

Thanks a lot

check if they optimize pages for certain keywords and do your own research on those keywords

analyzing the competition takes time

Use SEMRush to find out what keywords they rank for and how much estimated traffic it brings them.

SpyFu.com has a nice tool where you can compare your site and your competitors site and it will give you a nice concise list of keywords your competitor is optmizing for, that you might be missing out on.

The analysis is automated based on their content so it pulls some funny results, but I've used it for some larger clients with nice results.

I also take a look at their on-page to see if they spent any time optimizing that.

Write down keywords in their meta/title tags, what they are using in h1's, in their nav bars, etc.

I put all the spyfu and meta keywords I scraped into 1 file and run the whole thing through ranktracker.

Gives you a nice start!

Instead of worrying about where your competition is, I suggest that you do the research on breaking your " general niche " keyword/keywords down into micro-niche keywords and develop pages within your site that target them, leaving your index/main page as the primary general keyword.

Don't worry about what keywords your competitors are after and more about the keywords your should be going after yourself, based on traffic, sales data, adwords promotions and forum/community interest in the market.

You competitors aren't your problem/issue in making money and top rank online, it is in your own seo, marketing research and understanding of what the people that would be interested in buying from you want and think like.

Hope that helps.
