The stars method, is the current way to rate a thread.
You can give it stars and the average stars will be shown in the list.
The issue:
Competition and idiots tend to rate down threads without a fair consideration of the content.
You can unlikely keep up a 5 star thread over a long period, no matter how great the content may be.
My suggestion:
Change Star into Reps
Users can add reputation to a thread, the more reputation the greater/brighter the star/stars or just shown as a golden number.
This will change that people with high rep have more influence on a thread rating.
And without enough reputation the "rate down" option can be removed, so it's less likely an idiot or any competition votes a thread down as those often do not have much rep by themself.
A thread could start with the base reputation the member of it has.
