road to success hit a bump

First I want to say this site is amazing. I got into this about 6 weeks ago. Honestly I never even heard of SEO, wordpress, or any of the tools used to rank. Now, after 6 weeks of solid daily effort I've put a few sites up.

First site. I used click bank affiliates, and tried going with meatballs strategy of manual posting on articles found with google alerts. I was getting a very small amount of traffic,and also had some problems with the site "bad theme". I now can create super sweet sites using just the 2011 theme "I cant believe how much I learned about wordpress!!" I did have a total of 3 order form submits, but never saw any money come from it. I decided that manual posting is too much work and wanted to try to rank a site. I then put up a couple articles with 1 keyword per article. example: in the title, in the url, 4% density, meta tags.

Second site. Did loads of keyword research. I used mackdonjo's method found on here and also traffic travis. I found 7 keyword strings that get over 1000 Exact match US searches per word. I actually ended up ranking #1 for a one word keyword for a day! Now when I run rank tracker it only shows 1 of my words in top 100. I'm going nuts trying to figure out why I am not ranking, but I did do dumb, and that may be the issue. I blasted the site using no hands SEO about 5 days after making it : ( That was a dumb move.

Here are my questions:
Did I blow it by putting out spammy backlinks directly to my money sites?

Will these sites ever rank good because the backlinks?

As for a keyword that has pretty weak competition, cant I just rank 1st page for it with good onsite SEO? Probably not enough info on that to get a good answer.

I know now that if I want backlinks then I need to build link pyramids.. moneysite - quality .gov or .edu sites - spammy sites to them. Does that sound about right?

Any help would be apprieciated. I have a goal of having 50 micro niche sites at about $10 a day off of adsense, or one of my affiliate accounts. If anyone else is at about the same level I am, I would love to take some time to discuss strategies to get a fresh perspective.

Ok, I was in the penalty box from google. I found that I have way to high of a keyword density "some where 17%" lol.

I've put them all just under 3% now. I also made a few web 2.0 sites and am starting my backlink pyramid. Hopefully we see some improvement.

Well sites have all improved, and i'm getting atleast 1 adsense click a day. This is good, but what really took off is my fiverr gigs. I found a few I could do easily, then made some ads, that offered a bit more then the other gigs. I also looked at some of the negative feedback that the competion recieved, and made it a point to state I will not do that. I had 5 orders in one day for just one.

The moral of my story is, this stuff takes time but with hardwork, it will pay off! I learned almost everything I know from this site, this place is like a gold mine training camp!!!!

Every journey to success is full of bumps! IM is a massive learning curve and despite what many promise - there is no short-cut to overnight success. Learn from mistakes and keep moving forward!

To answer some of your questions:

New sites get a bump in rankings from a short period of time. I'm not entirely sure why but I think google is possibly 'testing' your site for traffic, user interaction etc.

Keyword stuffing is a no-no, especially post panda. If you're using Traffic Travis (even free version), run the on-page SEO analysis and this will give you an indication of how to improve things.

For off-page SEO it's about building diverse, high quality links. Incredibly tedious and time consuming I know. Some programs do this for you but as you're new to SEO and IM I'd suggest doing it manually to understand what it's all about.

Lastly you won't always rank well, even if your on and off page SEO is done right. Factors like domain age and page rank influence factors so it's worth reading up on those issues too.

There's no such thing as 'blasting' with NHS. I add every new domain I make into NHS straight away, it never hurts them. Only get about ~100 confirmed links a day from that software anyways and they get indexed slowly.

Thanks guys for all of your responses. It seems that I was working on so many things with the sites, that I overlooked some very basic things for on page SEO. I followed some great examples on manually building a link pyramid for one of my newer sites, it indexed so much faster, and my impressions are on the rise as well as clicks.

As for NH SEO, this is my first backlink program i tried out. It seemed to be posting only whois links to my site, not blog comments. I did run the program the other day on my tier 3 urls, and it posted over 1k in whois. I know what whois is, but does it work for a backlink? Like does it post just my url. I'm not sure.
