Is authority sitewide?

Lets say there is a site with a lot of authority. Does it matter what page I get a backlink from on that site, will I still get the same authority boost?

I know google ranks pages not websites, but I tought Authority was relative to your site? Since it mostly depends on how you add content and where you link to in the big picture.

So lets say I get a link from wikipedia, does it matter on which page it is placed and what keyword I give it?

A ******** link with the keyword "test" would help rank a page for "test", but a noFollow link only passes authority, which is why I am curious about this keyword and placement thing.

A site that links to lower authorities on it's top level pages will not be as valuable as the authority is diluted externally. Note that dmoz only links to high authorities on its top level pages.

My statement is that google ranks websites, what do you think would rank better in google, a page on Wikipedia or a page on a brand new site?

Sites like DMOZ and Wikipedia can link to whoever they want without penalty, because they are whitelisted.

On the button - webPAGES are just part of the 'bigger picture' being the overall quality and autority of the website as a whole. This of course is why smaller websites are struggling since they cannot generate the authority with a site link network of just a few urls. There are exceptions to this though, fresh pages and emd's can rank as a page on their own standing in the early days, but come a few months of maturity they will slip unless your overal website doesn't evolve....that is depending upon the level of competition you are in - all that said, there are so many variables in this game its just crazy to fortell events

Any proof that EMD's outrank authority sites? A page on an authority site will always outrank a new EMD with fresh content. The only advantage you can do to the EMD is build links but the authority site only has to do the same thing.

Answering specifically to OPs question. Yes it does. So go for the best deal. If you get only a page link, check the PR and backlink portfolio for that particular page.
