It's a big video course on how to get listed in Google Places. It's selling for $397! Looks like there's over 1 gig of video to download.

Sorry, but you have to have a local address for each places listing in each city.

Google Places is ever evolving and can change from day to day in terms of rankings, algo factors, etc. Having a strong organic website will greatly improve the chances of a higher Google Places listing in the packs.

The 7-packs have returned for many areas (sure, 3packs are around as well).

Agreed. Many of my current clients began with a Google Places listing so I have quite a bit of experience with them. The author of the maps marketing video course has a huge wealth of knowledge.

If your serious about offline biz fro local biz...You need to pick this course up and study it.

Dang! I wonder how I could convince another business to let me verify using their address? Add a suite #B or something to their address so google will see it as separate. Come on you black hatters....this is right up your ally

I find it interesting that the guy that runs Local Visibility System - Phil I think his name is - charges a flat $650 for a GP listing and then nothing monthly

Personally, I think he is a) doing his clients a disservice because the Places listing needs to be monitored IMO, to make sure it stays at the top (hopefully it got there in the first place) and b) he is leaving money on the table WHILE not doing his best for the clients in monthly monitoring.

Maybe he does GP listings that aren't exclusive per industry per area, hence just charging the flat fee. I think exclusivity is a huge selling feature for potential clients and something that all of us working with GP should offer

To clarify, one of my clients serves [city] and his organic traffic all comes in from [services][city] but his business is located a couple of miles from the centre of town. The Places listings are totally dominated by businesses in the city centre, most (not all) pretty well optimized. I can't seem to break into that top 7 despite throwing citations,videos,reviews, backlinking citations etc. etc.

I'm wondering if I'm wasting my time and should just concentrate on the organic results. Is GP so heavily weighted by postcode that all the other stuff becomes irrelevant without that city centre office?

This is supposed to be changing and the catchment area is supposed to be widening but it does depend on your service. Google has quoted that people looking for a tyre service are willing to travel to find the best place and the catchment area will be much wider, but if you are looking for a pizza it's likely that you will want something centrally located and hence the catchment area will be targetted in the centre.

Someone posted today about listing your address in Google Places. If you do not service people at your address you must hide your address otherwise you could find your listing being dropped. Not sure if that applies to your client, here's the story about this:

That's good news. The service is one that people will travel for and not many people live in the city centre, so they might actually be nearer to my client anyway in a lot of cases. Had always seemed like an unfair advantage to the central businesses to me.

In this case the customers do go to the address. I had read something similar in the past that suggested that you always should say that they do regardless to maximise exposure. Can't remember where I saw this.
