I was at Dirty Sanchez live the other day and unfortunately for me they had a dubstep dj for 3 hours before. Worst 3 hours of my life.

No offence to those who like it - each to their own - but I practice guitar/drums and more until my fingers can't take it anymore. People calling themselves 'musicians' these days...how do they practice? Clicking and dragging? If you've got Windows you can make music. The real skill comes with actually knowing music theory and being able to play instruments in my opinion.

There's a couple of dubstep songs I've heard that I don't mind I suppose but on the most part it all sounds like one long song.

I see some real dubstep in this thread, which makes me happy, but I'm really tried and should be sleeping now so I won't be listening to anything now but this is one of my favorite tracks, the real dubstep, the thing that got me into this is: Skism - The Blank. The 16 bit remix is also awesome!

And I have to agree with this. Some of the dubstep out there is labelled as dubstep but it's only a poor imitation of the real thing. Though certain tracks that contain a hint of dubstep are awesome!

Edit: Well at least this is an example of what I think that dubstep is, what it's evolved into even if it doesn't fully follow the technical aspects behind dubstep. This is what dubstep means to me and it's definitely far from all of the mainstream stuff.

The real skill comes with actually knowing music theory

Don't kid yourself into believing that you must play a traditional instrument to do this. Most well received electronic producers are extremely talented in this department. They're more on par with a composer than a simple instrumentalist. Being able to sculpt sound to what you hear in your head is a very very hard skill to attain, and requires an in depth knowledge of the science of sound, as well as a ton of experience to back it. Operating a DAW is every bit of playing an instrument that strumming strings on a guitar is, don't get butthurt over it because it's not a genre you enjoy.


That being said, 99% of Dubstep sucks donkey dick. Skrillex even cups the balls and swallows. Bassnectar makes up the 1%.
