Got an interview with an SEO company

I submitted a CV to a company earlier today and within an hour i got an email back, asking for an interview on thursday morning.

Should i collect together samples of all of my sites rankings and take that with me?
What kind of things should i say/show/etc in the interview?

I've never been to a proper interview before, other than for my current job (at a convenience store) where i basically just sat around laughing with the manager for 15 minutes, so i didn't exactly get any Interview Practise there.

The position is marked as 'Trainee', so would that mean they're looking for someone with some, but not alot of experience?
They want someone to do stuff like keyword research, link building, ppc advertising, facebook and twitter promotion etc, all the general stuff.

I have no idea if it's going to be a group interview or if it'll be one on one, but i'm nervous as hell now.

If you have an idea of all that "general stuff" that you mentioned then there really is no need to be nervous. I am sure they're not looking for more than that from a trainee

Check the company and look for information about it and be sure you have knowledge about what it is, about what they do in their business, who are their clients, which products they sell etc.

It's normal to be ansious and nervous but try to look confident, organise the work you did until now that can be relevant for the position you have applied for so you can show if needed. You can search on the internet some of the most common asked questions in interviews so you can think about them and it will ehlp you feel more confident,m less anxious and even if they won't ask the same questions, it will prepare you for the process.

Be carefull with your "body language" it will say more about you than your own words, keep eye contact with your interviewer, show interest and remember that the interview is mostly a conversation so relax and be yourself, don't pretend to be someone different.

Im not experienced in SEO but i do have experience in human resources practices so if you are worried about the selection process feel free to ask

I think there main focus will be on the things that how you have managed things simultaneously so far. SO be prepared as they are more probably going to ask that what had been your role in your earlier projects so far and what extra you had given to them? did you tried anything out of the box or something similar I guess

I treated each interview as a practice run, a test bed if you will, t gather marketing data on how to market myself. I went in assuming that I would not get the job. Knowing this ahead of time, I knew going into the interview that I was there to learn about the interview process so it will help me when i have a "real" interview, so i wasn't nervous. After all, I was going there to learn how the process works, what kind of questions they fielded, and how they acted to my various responses, to help me choose better responses for the next interview.

The funny thing is, when I approached it as using them to hone my interviewing skills, I actually nailed the interviews. I wasn't worried about getting the job, I was interested in getting the experience for next time. I just fielded the questions they tossed at me as best I could and watched their reaction to what I said. I was qualified, so I was not out of my element.

It might have been personal psychological warfare, but it worked every time but once.

afro25 - remember they need you. If you carry yourself well, and you've got a portfolio of sites you've worked on you've pretty much got the job.

Don't want to sound alarmist - but there's some less professional places out there that just want to rinse you of all your knowledge for cheap, and once they're done, they'll let you go, and do the same to someone else. Make sure you get a scope of what the company is about, you'll be able to get a feel if this is their game or not. It probably won't be, but just be wary and remember that they need you as much as you need them.

I've taken a look at their site(s) and they seem to be quite professional and their main site is 10 years old, so they have been around for quite a while, but i'll bear your suggestion in mind.

That's an excellent suggestion, So i'll try my best to look at it like that, as though it doesn't matter if i 'win' or 'lose', but that it's a practise run for the real thing.


This is why i love BHW, everyone here is always extremely helpful and willing to make a positive comment, whereas on most forums i've seen all you get is spam and people really taking a negative attitude to everything.
