Is there even a real google penalty? Like an actual official one?

Or is it just a scale of everybody's prespective view of google's penalty? whenever I try to google it up, I always see third-party sites that barely hold up .

Of course!

Check out the Google forums; you'll find thousands of people asking for various reconsiderations.

De-indexing usually only happens where a site is doing massive outbound linking (link farms) or where there is a combination of negative factors like: Very low quality content and layout, linking to and from 'bad/spammy neighbourhoods', and bad advertising/legal practices etc.

Penalisation normally happens from over-optimisation of keyword terms or overly aggressive linking, and usually only affects those specific search terms. i.e. You've built hundreds or thousands of links to a new site, all with the same exact anchor text, which is also in the site URL (An EMD/PMD - or Exact/Phrase Match Domain), and it's in the Page Title, H1 tags and loaded into the content too. This is the ideal example of a newbie mistake in online marketing; thinking that more is better.

A 'Google Slap' is the industry lingo for either a broad sweeping change/update in their algorithm which affects a lot of sites, or when a single person/business gets hit by Google for practices they consider outside of their TOS (Terms Of Service), and this is often associated with the AdSense program and AdSense sites.

I have a feeling I got this because I unknowingly posted a comment on a blog with the last comments widget enabled. This led me to literally gain overnight 1000+ links from the same site and, a week later, I have over 6000 links from the same site pointing to my domain name. I used my name for the anchor text as it was a good comment.

What do you think of this? On Webmaster Tools I have these 6000+ backlinks from that domain and I am reading different opinions on this. If the massive backlinks come from an OK site (PR2), does Google still penalize you or does it ignore all those backlinks?

That's one of the main problems with a lot of WP plugins; they take control away from you for your link building. And you can end up with a massive link-spam in a very short time. I've seen sites that have gained 30k+ indexed blog links in the space of 24 hours; which is BOUND to hit some Google flags.

Site-wide backlinking - which it pretty much sounds like you've almost got is NEVER good. It looks very spammy. Google won't be counting all those links; nothing like. But it will be aware that that many have been created in a very short time-frame.

Thanks. What can I do to remove all those links? I checked the site and my comment no longer appears on the last comments widget (it only shows the last 5). I still have 6000+ backlinks.

Does Google listen to us webmasters with issues like this? I actually sent them a DMCA complaint from a site who copied some of my articles and they quickly deindexed the site and Google got back to me in 3 days saying if they could help with anything else. Do they listen to us too if we have unknowingly spammed with backlinks? I mean, I could easily go on that site and post a comment with my competitors URL and have him also get 6000+, so surely they must be aware of these sort of flaws.

if you get penalized you will see a warning in webmaster tools

other things are not penalization specific to you

Even USING Google Webmaster tools is a footprint to who you are. Avoid registering with Goolge for anything that you can avoid. And you don't need their webmaster tools.

If the widget has stopped displaying then all those links will start to disappear as those pages are re-crawled. You'll probaly find you 'bounce' a little and then stabilise.

Keep building good quality content-based links at a steady pace, establishing a good link-velocity and I'm sure you'll come through it ok.

Good luck! And avoid auto-link plugin tools like the plague - they're too untrustworthy.

i am a legit website developer :)

So am I! :D

But I'm also an aggressive SEO'er and own around a thousand sites.

The old adage "Don't sh*t where you eat" comes to mind...

I actually did a test where I tried to get one of my websites into the sandbox, the sole reason is because I wanted to find out how hard it was and how long if ever it would take to come out.

So i brought a new domain and put 5 pieces of duplicate content on it, next I paid somebody with some spammy programmes like xrumer and scrapebox to go mad on it.

At first it ranked it just kept doing a crazy Google dance for around a week, after that it got stuck at #12 for around 2 months.

When it finally moved it had disappeared and took around 6 weeks to appear in the rankings again (so yes there is a sandbox) now it ranks #8 for the keyword and has done so for a long time.

Basically what I am trying to say is it's not easy to sandbox a site, if it was you could just wipe out all your competitors.

I think this happened to one of my latest site. It was new and just 2 weeks old. Over aggressive link building.

Stayed at #3 for few days then disappear to 140+ for more than week already. Even all its inner pages that ranked at first page, moved to 100+.
