The solution to all the DNS shutdowns (ie. Megaupload)

It is obvious that USA is cracking down on any file sharing site big time. However every site is still only just a domain name that is hosted on a server, which in technical terms means that a domain name points to an ip address.

Some very clever guys have come up with a way around the draconian rules of DNS control from the big boys, and I personally think this is quite an amazing development. Say hello to Namecoin on http://dot-bit.org/Main_Page

Namecoin is basically a domain name registration platform for registering .bit domain names. The beauty of all this is that Namecoin is decentralized in its nature, and based of the Bitcoin source code, which we all heard so much about.

So grab your .bit domain name and create whatever site you want, because those CANNOT be forcefully shut down no matter how hard the respective authorities will try.

Only downside is that you have to "spread" the DNS information in order to your visitors to be able to browse .bit domain names. This can only be accomplished if more or less everyone chips in to make namecoin/.bit the next big thing so that DNS hookup gets spread to the surfers (knowingly or unknowingly).

Be aware that namecoin/.bit is quite a technically difficult implementation and requires a lot of read and investigation on how it all works, but there is an IRC chat for it on freenode.

Actually looking at this it seems like they are still in Alpha stages, and we are still waiting for a nice GUI to administrate all our Namecoin/.bit domains. However it works, and thats what matters at the moment.

Can STILL be shut down because each country is slowly but surely adopting their own versions of the SOPA bills. The internet cannot become free or decentralized without something such as Namecoin/.bit

DNS needs to be decentralized and domain names will never be shut down ever again.

Oh and was it not a Hong Kong based company that megaupload was owned by? I guess the whole "other country" doesnt really matter much since ALL DNS is controlled in the United States.

If your not breaking the law your site will not be shut down,everyone that had their site taken down was violating the law. Even if SOPA passes the only sites that will really be taken down,are ones that can already be taken down.

How in hell could you run a good file sharing site without breaking the law. Censor every upload . Don't be daft.

As for all the illegal ones already being shut down. How innocent you are, They just starting with the big guys, eventually You wont even get a way with 10 visitors a day, and they will be after you

Servers have to be hosted somewhere,which means that they are under a jurisdiction of the country where they are hosted.

So people are no longer able to make write their own books, write songs or make a movie?
