Aged Domain Test

Hey folks-

Having been practicing SEO for over 2 years now, I decided to start testing purchasing aged domains to assist, well, with several things. So, I wanted to test if a PR 4 aged domain held its "PR" after a complete switch of registrys and DNS settings and... after all, if a domain that had no back links could really have that high of a PR just by age alone.

Here's how it went...

For this test, I decided to purchase two aged domains. Here are the specs.

Domain 1-PR 4
-3 years old
-No registry drops, registry was not private
-had a wordpress 2011 theme with not content installed
-had no backlinks to it...

Domain 2-PR 3
-6 years old
-No registry drops, registry was not private
-22 backlinks, 3 of which were PR 5's and one PR 3, rest were do follow. Most all are footer links and exact match anchor text to domain name.

So, my hypothesis was that the PR 4 domain would loose it's "PR" the next time it was indexed.

Here's the process I followed:

1. Once domain hit my account, I purchased privacy for each domain.
2. I installed WP on both domains
3. Added one fresh, 500+ word article to both domains

All of this occured between 1/20/2012 and 1/22/2012.

So both domains had some time to sit.

This morning (12/23/2012) both domains still have had their PR.

This evening, the domain that had a PR 4 and no back links dropped to 0.

So, what I draw from this is that it's not good to buy aged domains with any good PR and no back links.




What are your thoughts?

Did I do something wrong in the process?

You should always put the old content up if possible.
Are you sure the PR4 was actually a PR4? Might have been 301'd previously.

Midiman said what I was about to. A LOT of aged domains on the drop indexes are faked. Checking them is a tedious process, but generally, if you see no backlinks, you gotta ask yourself, how the f**k do they have a PR4?

Your domains may lost PR after next PR update not now.

I've actually had pretty good experience with aged domains. Considering I can usually get them for a couple bucks extra, its worth it for the extra vigorous backlinking you can do. I really really really hate getting penalized with new sites, so the extra money is well worth it.

The PR4 domain was definitely a fake one. If it was real, it would have only dropped after next PR update.

I took on of my sites down for 1 day.. it got a PR0... week later, it was back to it's original PR. The current PR of your page is based on current content and links.. not what was previously on it.

I know you are not doing wrong. But I want to PR6 to PR7 websites with 301 redirect.

I always make sure that any PR is supported with at least 2 backlinks that are equal to the PR I am buying. Also, check the age of the backlink (SEO SpyGlass) the older they are the better the chance they will stay there and support the PR of the domain. Although it is not fool prove, some have lost the PR but not entirely (yet)

yes ...if you get a old domain but it do not have backlink .
Google will less index your page or may not even crawl your site because the domain to not have a existing backlink and will cause the site take as new website.

I have just purchased an old domain 10 year old that had PR2 and only 50 backlinks so far the PR has stuck. Whois information changed should i make this private?? DNS settings where switched for a brief period of like 2 hrs but i had em changed back. it expired on 12/12/11 and it was parked with godaddy till the 24/1/12. still has page rank.
