So you're telling me if you do a search and see 1,500,000 competing websites for one term, and 4,500 for another term, that's not helpful to you at all? You're not going to think "Hmmm, seems a lot of people don't really know about this keyword, it will probably be easier to rank than the one where 1.5M people are trying to rank for it."

I don't use that number at all, no. First I sort so that I only have those with a decent CPC and search volume and then i run the top 10 in MS and then top 3 in a more detailed traffic travis.

one more thing: focussing on the top 10 might be very misleading, especially if there is a lot of competition since this competition might be relatively new and didn't make it to the top 10 yet... but once there can be way tougher to beat than current top 10. So yeah.. size of competition really does matter a lot..

Dude what's your point? Top 10 will always be the toughest to beat at that given moment of course new competition can join and go to top 10, but the ones in top 10 at any given moment will always be the toughest to beat.

Obviously if there are a billion competing pages it will more likely be more competitive but you won't base your choice simply on the amount of competing pages. The step of looking at the amount of competing pages simply seems pointless as you'll have to analyse top 10 anyway.

I disagree, strongly. Although it seems that way at first sight, this is a very basic and short sighted view imho. Your strongest competitors may very well be outside the top 100 (heck, even outside top 1000 if their brand new) and already building very strong content and setting up some nice SenukeX campaigns or whatever...
How many times I've seen competitors in the top 10 without any external backlinks for the given niche keyword, only to find out some EMD's currently outside the top 100 are trying there best to rank #10. That may very well be your true competition.

Again, I agree you should ALSO look at top 10, but don't disregard the intitle, inurl factors as being stupid and not useful. They just are good indicators along with the rest of them and any basic keyword research guide will tell you to look for this.
