So I ranked a big ticket item #1 in Google, because my domain has the company name in it I decided to use Amazon affiliate for now, rather than them seeing my domain name when I sign up for their affiliate program.
Site gets about 750 visitors a day. First day I check Amazon and I got 250 click throughs and 8 sales. Holy crap I thought. But turns out they bought food, books, and other items and not the high priced item I'm promoting. Today, another 8 sales, and same thing.

1) I can't believe my click through is so high, it's about 33%, which seems impossible.
2) I can't believe people searching for xxxxx product, are going to amazon to possibly buy it, and end up buying a bunch of other shit they weren't looking for lol. It's only maknig me a couple bucks a day, but I'm just shocked that people are buying other items. I guess that's how Amazon makes the big bucks, people come for one thing and end up buying multiple items.

Anyone else use amazon and see this?

Awesome, I just hope they don't bust you for the domain name.

Hell money is money! :) Enjoy!

I find that people typically buy what you are promoting and then add in a few other items because they figure "well, as long as I am here I might as well get..."

No one has bought the big ticket item yet though :( That's what I was aiming for because it's $1000+

News to me, wasn't expecting it.

No offense but this is an old news, every amazon wso or guide insists about it as one of the powerful aspects of being an amazon affiliate.

It really just depends on the item. I have sites that people end up buying the item and others where they buy other stuff. Be happy they're buying stuff.

On a side note, be careful if you're using a domain name with a company's name in it. You could get hit with trademark infringement. I've gotten a couple of cease and desists doing that.

That is the problem with high ticket items.... a lot of tire kickers.

Amazon will always sell something. You got a 24 hour ticket to ride right there. So maybe they don't buy anything when they visit your link but next morning they buy something. . that is where your sales come from. .

As for your big ticket item, its a problem. Unless the visitor is on the buy now stage, they will be surfing around looking for the best deal. Sad news is, when they come around to purchase the big ticket item from amazon 2 weeks later, your affiliate link won't be there.

I have 1 amazon affilliate site and made a dozen sales but they never purchased what was on my site, it's crazy but true, I guess I chose the wrong niche :)

I have a few amazon sites and make sales regularly. With some of the sites people order what is offered on the site, with others, sales come in for all different stuff. But at the end I don't care, as long as I make the sale and get the commission.
Weirdest order once was, someone coming from a kids toy site and ending up ordering about 20 books from the kind of "Being alone with stepdad".

250 click throughs and 8 sales = 3.2% conversion rate

it's normal. amazon doesn't convert as we thought.

I have a bunch of different Amazon sites and 93% of the products people buy is products i don't promote, just random sales when they click through. (usually it might be in the same category though)

In fact it's pretty logical, this 24hr cookie is way to short for people to take a decision to buy something, especially when it are items above $100,- people search / observe, search again a couple of days and then go right back to Amazon or whatever site and purchase.

In my country we have a similiar site as Amazon with a 7 day cookie, but the problem there is that you only get paid for the product you referred :S it's always messed up one way or the other.

Yeah I figured, but I'm actually ranking above the company that sells the product, so I was hoping the odd one would atleast buy it. But then again, Amazon page has just okay reviews, I bet if I was on the company's affiliate program, and their 'sales' page, it could possibly convert more.

Yeah, I've received quite a few. This is why I'm doing amazon affiliate rather than off the compan's site directly.

I don't really do affiliate stuff. I just seen this domain in my portfolio, and has been there for like two years, so I did a search on it, and has a lot of searches, 6k for one keyword, 27k for one, and 22k for one. I'm #1,#1,#5 in ranks, so just want to get the last one to #1, and see what kind of money it can make.

How much did you make?
Only a couple bucks first day. Haven't gotten anymore reports yet, just that 8 more sales yesterday. Tomorrow should update. Well a couple bucks off 4 items shipped. So that was half the order shipped.

What surprised me was the click thru rate. It's averaging around 750 visitors per day, but actually, I just checked and I've been averaging 500 last few days. So two days I have almost 500 clicks, and about 1000 visitors. So nearly 50% are clicking the link, which seems really high? CPC for adwords was $2. It might make more sense going that way. Shitty thing with adense is very few places sell this company's product, most go direct to them. And just checking google and the ads shown, two are from the company, and one is a coupon place, so I somewhat doubt I'd get anywhere near a dollar per click.

And I'm going to try and see what it can make regularly and dump it on Flippa I think.

The odd one will buy one! but the operative word is "odd". As virus said tyre kickers. This is how it is with all big ticket items. Here is a secret. Rank for small ticket items that do LOTS of traffic and you will do better. not really a secret but you know what I mean.

You are getting sales for products your not promoting because of COOKIES.

Think of cookies as viruses, the more people you "infect" the higher chances you have for multiple sales.

example User#1 Gets laptop infected (cookies) by visiting your site and not purchasing.

User #2 gets on User #1's infected laptop and Goes to Amazon to purchase something and you get credited with the sale.

Amazon TOS prohibit using the trademarked item in the domain name and your account can be cancelled.

For those who are going to say they have been doing this for years without any issues, i would say that the important thing is that Amazon CAN cancel, not that it will cancel.
