I do :). I'm ADHD-PI. I go through the week thanks to methylphenidate (day job). I suspend it whenever I'm required to do something creative (ie. ideas for an adv. campaign), but most of the time it helps me focus as needed.

I also have a strict schedule for my meals (5 times a day), because I don't get hungry while under the effects of the medication, and I don't want to become anorexic. Another secondary effect is that I become a serious person, unlike my real personality. Co-workers call me 'Wednesday Addams' because of that.

On weekends I simply suspend treatment so I can be myself around my friends and family.

Yup I got most of them, in school I was the kid that had to get up and go to the bathroom just to get out and walk around, always fidgeting. I think Thom Hartmann's hunter vs. farmer theory of our ancestors has some good points. About individuals with ADHD may be more adept at searching and seeking and less adept at staying put and managing complex tasks over time.

I think you can tell who has ADHD by their post count on this forum heh.

I think it is a personality trait, not a disorder. If you study the different kinds of personality types (google mbti) some of them have the disorder built into them.

Most classes in school are taught in the most boring, uncreative way imaginable. If you can't stay focused on these boring uncreative tasks, you somehow have a disorder. The real problem is either A. that person's just dumb or B. it's not taught in an intriguing way suited to that person's learning style.

That being said, I'm pretty sure ADD or ADHD if I so happen to be hyper is built into by personality, but I've never been diagnosed. I basically crave interesting information or stimulating conversation of ideas and/or arguments, but I find the actual drudgery of proving theories, methods, or whatever unbearable. I'm usually very calm, but can go through periods of being extremely hyper/overenergized.

BTW, I'm 19 if that matters.

Without coffee I can't focus and do any work. :(

Me too, but that has to do with the fact that I 've been drinking coffee regularily since I was a teenager. It 's called addiction :) Addiction has physical manifestations.

I've got minor ADD. Lots of people have minor ADD/ADHD though.

haha, my adhd activates on these threads.... i should be working!!!!!

It really pisses me off how people can say 'When ADHD kicks in' - it doesn't kick in, it's always there, and always will be - it doesnt just 'go away' -

It's a chemical in-balance, and to those who have it, you should all know what it's like.

How people use it as a 'I've got ADHD' statement, are a joke in my eyes.

ADD/ADHD is just a fuckin' gimmick so the doctors can get you hooked on amphetamines. Nothing more..

They say ADD is rising in kids lately, the kids are fine, they are just trying to get these kids hooked on pharmaceuticals at a early age.

A bunch of bullshit if you ask me.

You cant focus? Well then relax a little. Take a deep breathe, and regain your consciousness.

You obviously don't have it then, not as easy to just "relax a little". Yes I agree with you though, they're just trying to sell more drugs for most kids. I know I have it but won't touch drugs, I just try and deal with it best I can without them. But it's not just a gimmick for a lot of kids/adults.

You, sir, are a retard.

I have been diagnosed but never took the medicine.

I originally was tested because in 2nd grade I tended to stand up doing all my work and sometimes paced instead of sitting down. I was in trouble all the time but my teacher didn't know what to do as I had some other special needs as well.

Whenever I didn't eat too much sugar, got to stand or pace at my leisure while studying/working, had frequent breaks like in a different "learning center", and a bit of sympathy, I did well in school.

I think that some people don't fit into the "sit in a desk all day long" because I don't think kids are meant to do that.

As an adult I still have the same tendencies. I stand up and work for a few hours a day sitting the laptop on top of my TV. I pace alot when thinking. I can't sit for more than 30 minutes without moving around.

I need to work on 2 or 3 things at once bouncing between them every 10 minutes or so to be able to get anything done. Sometimes I'll watch something on netflix for 10 minutes, do project A for 10 minutes, and then project B for 10 minutes rotating between them to be able to get anything done. I do the same when reading book switching after each section or chapter to a different book.

I'll refrain from name calling even though your ignorant statement is a direct insult for people like me that struggle with ADD (Are you a scientologist or something?).

Of course ADD exists; ever heard of Quantitative EEG (Brain Mapping)?. Well, ADD shows in QEEG brainwaves. It's a real thing, call it disorder or trait or whatever, but it exists and it affects the way you relate to others and learn things. It may not be a problem if you are a freelance artist, but for any other job that requires sticking to schedules, doing repetitive chores, pay attention for prolonged periods of time, etc. it really puts you at a disadvantage.

high-function-autism for me...
A curse and a gift at the same time. :(

The Southpark reference is of course not to be taken as an academic theses on the issue. It does in my opinion though present the issue with an easy, critical and entertaining way. Which is more accessible than linking to a paper.

For the serious part of the discussion, I used the Wikipedia quote, which (assuming it is not fake) is very clear on the issue
  • There is no biological basis
  • The criteria are determined in part by social norms (i.e. what the average Joe thinks)

Southpark is a cartoon, lol. I didn't even read the rest of what you had to say. I already showed you an article that explains it can be detected with a brain scan. There's a lot more medical sites that explain how it can be diagnosed by scanning the brain. I really didn't say that much in my post, maybe you should go have your brain scanned.

Gee, by the look of the poll results it seems ADHDers are the majority on here.
