About to make my first Authority Site - Tips? Tricks? Suggestions?

After successfully in bringing in a profit with a couple small campaigns, I'm finally going to take the leap and try my hand at creating an authority site. Yea!

I know very little about building an authority site. I'm assuming it's just the same method as creating a niche site but the scale is just larger correct? For those who have created an authority site, do you have any tips, ticks, or suggestions that I should be aware of? Any decent guides I should try reading before starting?

One piece of advice.... do not take short cuts.

Lots of high quality content, slow high quality link building and don't think about results too much - and as above, don't cut corners.

Virus is right, a very important point.

My advice is to build the site without ever thinking about how you are going to make money off it.
Even when you hit the first page for some of your keywords, don't think about money, think about growth.
Useful content is the key. True authority sites are there for their readers/users. Always keep that in mind.

Add content daily, add content first, backlinks second. The more content you have, the more natural backlinks you will start getting to the point where you don't have to worry about building links, your audience will do that for you.

Are you going to build it on Wordpress?

If so, make sure you get your categories and commonly used tags figured out early. It is a bitch to change those things later.

Couple more points:

-Show related posts below each article
-Link to related and useful articles within the actual post. (All authority sites have epic interlinking structures).
-Add fresh content multiple times throughout the day
-Tweet every new article
-Only Facebook 1 or 2 of your best articles a day. Techcrunch does a good job of this. You don't want to overwhelm people who have subscribed to you on Facebook
-Make sure the Facebook username, Twitter username, Youtube username are all available before you start getting readership.
-Social share buttons on each article
-Use facebook comments to reduce spam
-Actually respond to peoples comments

make sure you do it constantly, doesnt matter if its weekly, daily or hourly. it will hel you get noticed by G

While adding content take care of first passing it through copyscape so that its not flagged as duplicate by Google.

for those who have built authority sites before, where are you seeing "critical mass"?

ie after how many posts / pages / indexed pages are you seeing the site start to get big enough that it's seo is starts to be self-propelling?
