Choosing the right long-tail keywords help

I have looked many places but it is hard for me to find a complete answer.

What I would like to know is if I had a main keyword say Cool Blue Widgets that is my emd.org, and my homepage content supports this keyword, will it also help rank for Blue Widgets? For that matter, will it also help rank the singular version Blue Widget.

And also since I am using many variations of long tailed keywords, my keyword density for the simplest version, say Widgets, is very high like above 20%. Is this ok?

Those seem more like variations on the main keyword. Long tail keywords tend to have more words in them, since i'm not sure what cool blue widgets are i can't really suggest any but tools like market samurai and keyword blaze have long tail keyword features built in. Also 20% seems insanely highly and i think google are a bit conscious of keyword stuffing these days so i think somewhere between 1-3% would be better i believe.

So I shouldn't be targeting variations so much as it raises that simple keyword density very high? I pulled some of these from Traffic Travis and Market Samurai just to bump traffic as the variations don't have as high of a CPC.

Its good to target them too, but you'll want to have some longer search phrases mixed in with them as well. If the competition isn't to strong then you can rank for the variations too but the search term "widget" would be a pretty hard one to rank for i'd think.
I think it also depends on how you plan to monetise your site.

Yes very true, I am not trying to rank for the general term widget as it wouldn't make sense for my site. But the density factor is hard to control when I am using so many variations. An online tool that I assume scans the whole site says I have 35 instances of that term widget giving me a keyword density of 20%. However if i take my homepage article that is exactly 500 words, it has 19 instances of widget making it only 3% density. Should I trust my calculations then as that site may be taking in the ads displaying on my site with that keyword also?
